Support YOUR School!
Traditionally held on a Sunday in October, the "Res Run" will instead be a virtual race yet physical run/walk over the two weeks spanning October 16-31, 2020. Let's take back 2020 ... one step at a time!
Join us for one of four races: 5k, 10k, or 2mile run/walk along the same route as previous events*; or the 2.7 mile Reservoir run/walk along the paved trail of the Lafayette Reservoir**.
Registration for all races is $25**. Race packets that include our traditional long sleeve t-shirt and race bib will be available starting October 14.
*The 5k, 10k, and 2mile run/walk course will be marked along the sidewalk on the South side of Mt. Diablo Blvd. Roads will NOT be closed for runners. Please see maps for course.
**Parking and fees are not included in registration price.

Diablo Ballet - Live from the Runway
Join Diablo Ballet and Macy's Walnut Creek for their first-ever Covid safe fashion show featuring Diablo Ballet dancers modeling the latest men and women's holiday fashions right off the runway on Wednesday, November 4, 12 noon, at Macy's 2nd Floor Dress Department. This free event is limited to 25 people* safely distanced in-store and will also be broadcast live in the comfort of your own home on Diablo Ballet's Instagram and Facebook pages.

Gold Coast Chamber Next Virtual Concert Experience - Bach Inspired
The second concert in our Bach Shorts concert series, Bach Inspired, will be live-streamed via YouTube Live on Sunday, October 11 at 4:00 PM Pacific Time. Jennifer Kloetzel will be collaborating with composer Elena Ruehr. During Bach Inspired, Jennifer will interview Elena about her world premiere, Cricket the Fiddler, which is inspired by Bach's first suite.
As a ticket holder, you will also have access to the concert for one week after the performance! That means you can still enjoy the concert even if you are not available to see it live, and you can watch it again and again during the week.

Art of Mixology - Cocktail Kits Available for Pickup October 1st
Art of Mixology, Lamorinda Arts Council's biggest fundraiser, normally a sell out event at Orinda Theatre Square in October, featuring 18 bartenders pouring their creative cocktail libations - has gone virtual and is selling Mixology Cocktail Kits. Five finalist bartenders have been selected and their recipes turned into delicious cocktail kits with everything you need, except the alcohol which must be purchased separately. Mix up a delicious Mixology cocktail at home or do a Zoom cocktail party with your friends. Don't miss the live Mixology Awards Show when finalists mix their craft cocktails and we announce our 2020 Mixologist of the Year on October 16th at 7pm. Lamorinda Idol Winter Edition - Registration Opens October 1st
The Lamorinda Idol Winter Edition will run from October 2020 through March 2021 and is a virtual Program. Singers will submit videos and judges will select winners in each category who will receive cash prizes. Categories will include K-2nd grade soloists, 3rd-5th grade soloists, 6th-8th grade soloists, 9th-12th grade soloists, alumni soloists, K-5th grade groups, 6th-8th grade groups, 9th-12th grade groups and alumni groups. Art Embraces Words - October 18th
Call for Writers, Artists & Art Lovers! You are invited to participate in the LAC’s virtual Art Embraces Words webinar. It is scheduled via Zoom on Oct. 18th from 2-3:30 pm. Emerging writers read from their work at 10 minute intervals interspersed with visual artwork from local artists. Participating artists will be introduced and answer questions about their work. Portions of the event will be recorded and uploaded to social media. In this way art still 'embraces' the words. High School Visual Arts Competition - Registration now OPEN!
The 18th Annual High School Visual Arts Competition is going virtual this year! Registration is now OPEN HERE, and the Artists & Awards Recognition Show will be held on March 11, 2021. The High School Visual Arts Competition showcases and acknowledges art in four categories: 2D, 3D, Photography and the Lamorinda Arts Alliance Digital Art category. High school students who live in or attend school in Orinda, Lafayette, or Moraga, including all schools in the Acalanes Union High School District may participate. The competition includes cash prizes totaling $3000, as well as merit citations, and an online public exhibit on the Lamorinda Arts Council website. Creating in Place - Opportunity to Show Your Talent During SIP
Creating in Place is a virtual gallery space that welcomes Bay Area artists to exhibit and optionally sell their work created at home or in studio during the Covid-19 shelter-in-place period starting in mid-March 2020 and continuing throughout the pandemic period. It is an outlet to show the work you have created during these unusual times and to inspire others to make art from the comfort of home. What's New in the LAC Online Galleries?
Both galleries continue to be closed to the public due to the pandemic. As such, the Lamorinda Arts Council offers exhibits online. October in the Art Gallery at Wilder features the mixed media paintings of Margie Caldwell-Gill. “I approach my paintings with a sense of experimentation and play,” says the artist. See her online exhibition at https://lamorindaarts.org/wilder. And in the Art Gallery at the Orinda Library are four artists, including Dina Asna, Loralee Chapleau, Ann F. Fallin, and Elizabeth Hack. The variety of work includes Asna's “Be Happy” watercolors, Chapleau's expressive work honoring the changing beauty of the seasons, Fallin's exceptional, upbeat and positive watercolors and finally, Hack's collaboration with advisor Al Young, California Poet Laureate emeritus and photographer Philip Lewenthal and San Francisco Peace and Hope's literary journal devoted to poetry and art during these challenging times. Moraga Art Gallery Art exhibit: Dark and Light, A Delicate Balance
"Dark and Light, A Delicate Balance," will run through October 11, 2020. Please visit us at the gallery – we are open now on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 3:00pm.
Moraga Art Gallery is a cooperative featuring the work of nineteen established local artists and artisans whose work includes painting, sculpture, jewelry, print media, ceramics, photography and woodworking. This exhibit features the work of member artists, Irene Needoba and Mary Leigh Miller. In addition, come see the jewelry and encaustic paintings of our guest artist, Claudette McDermott.
The Moraga Art Gallery will host a new exhibit Oct 16 - Dec 24. There will be a virtual reception Saturday, November 7, @5pm. Featured Member Artists include Debby Koonce - paintings and Angelica Samame - paintings. The link to join the virtual reception will be posted on the Moraga Art Gallery website.
To safeguard our gallery staff and visitors, we require everyone visiting the gallery to wear a face mask and to maintain social distancing by keeping at least six feet apart. The gallery has hand sanitizer for guests to use when entering the gallery and gloves will also be available at the front desk for handling prints and ceramics. We are limiting the number of customers to four people at a time.
The gallery is located at 432 Center Street, Rheem Shopping Center, in Moraga. The gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3:00pm. Because we may need to change our hours if there are new health directives, please call first to confirm that we are open.

Mountain Shadow brings two terrific films to our community in October!
Mountain Shadow brings the best in foreign and U.S. films to our community, and in October we offer both. While society members enjoy a two-for-one double feature, general admission tickets for each show is always available to the public. The Peter Pan Foundation - Keeping the Magic and Music Alive!
The PPF, a Lafayette non-profit since 2007, has been finding creative solutions to continue sharing their hearts and talents with the communities who need them most! While their regular in-person visits to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, in-home wish reveals for Make-A-Wish kids and numerous other philanthropic and community service activities have been halted, they continue spreading their love and light by making performance videos, virtual visits and creating online activities.
Sadly, the organization has been hit especially hard by the pandemic. They have not been able to generate any revenue that funds their service endeavors and covers fixed operating expenses. The organization relies on two big stage musical theatre productions and donations throughout the year for income and was required to cancel all 2020 scheduled productions.
They are at risk of losing their home building on Mt. Diablo Blvd and have kicked off a SAVE OUR HOME campaign in the hopes of raising the funds needed to keep the foundation going. Their goal is to raise $75,000 by the end of the year.
"The PPF home is a place where I feel safe, accepted and truly happy," said Zac Faber, 15 of Lafayette. "It's a place where I can make a difference in my community and the world."

"Featured Artists Show," featuring noted artists Catherine Fasciato (oils) and Nancy Meaden (ceramics) will open September 29 and run through November 7. Meet the artists Saturday, October 3 at the Gallery, 12 – 5 PM.
Currently, the gallery is open on a limited schedule: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from noon - 5:00 PM. Appointments to see works, or the new show, are also available outside of regular business hours by calling or emailing the Gallery.

Assistance League of Diablo Valley’s Thrift Shop Now Open on Wednesdays!
During these everchanging times, certain aspects remain constant, one of which is the need to help those in our community who are vulnerable.
The dedicated member volunteers at Assistance League® Thrift Shop at the Way Side Inn, located at 3521 Golden Gate Way in Lafayette, are delighted to announce that this well-known landmark is now open on WEDNESDAYS! Bottom line: The thrift shop is now open on Tuesdays, WEDNESDAYS, Thursdays and Saturdays, from10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More great news, “Floor ready” donations are accepted at the thrift shop on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11a.m. or UNTIL FULL, as well as on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or UNTIL FULL.
Please remember that county approved masks must be worn upon arrival, while waiting in line and during actual shopping, check-out and departure. Likewise, no more than five shoppers are admitted to the thrift shop at any given time. Social distancing is still required during the allotted shopping time of 30 minutes.

Friends Corner Book Shop at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center
Friends Corner Book Shop at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center campus reopened for curbside service only onTuesday, September 8. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10-2 and Saturday from 9-1. The Shop is still unable to accept new donations.
If there is a specific book you would like to purchase, please request at [email protected]. A volunteer will let you know whether or not it is available. There will also be an opportunity to “window shop” as they will be placing books and other items in the windows. Please provide exact change or a check for purchase; checks may be made out to FLLLC. In addition to the books offered for sale in our shop, the Shop has over 1,800 books for sale on Amazon. Masks and social distancing will be required at time of pick up. |

The Lafayette Community Garden & Outdoor Learning Center's Annual Harvest Festival
This highlight of the fall season was originally scheduled to happen at the Community Garden on September 27, but alas, the pandemic changed all that. Now the Annual Harvest Festival will be celebrated virtually with a movie. The movie depicts how, even with limitations placed on its members, the garden became a much-needed respite during these unprecedented times. Lend a Hand to the Lafayette Historical Society
All of us, at some time or another, have probably wandered past the Lafayette Historical Society, located on the ground floor of the Library on Golden Gate Way. And some, during “non-COVID times” may have even visited the Society’s archives and history room and learned something they didn’t know about Lafayette’s past.
And who knew that the Society also maintains operates the City’s very first fire engine? Old Betsy as she is known, is a 1919 Model TT Fire Engine. Yes, that’s Old Betsy in the Library’s parking garage window.
The Society raises operating funds by a combination of its membership dues, newsletter sponsorships, book sales, the not-to-be-miss “Breakfast with Santa” event, and through the popular “Speaker Series.” Due to the COVID pandemic, the Society’s history room has been closed and the Speaker Series canceled. It also appears that the “Breakfast with Santa” will also have to be postponed this year. All that is our way of saying that the Society really could use the community’s help right now. If you have a chance, take a look around the Society’s Website where you can listen to a collection of oral histories from many notables Lafayettans, including Bill Eames, Larry Blodgett, Ed Stokes, Steve Falk, Jon Frank, and Jack Marchant. And, if there’s anybody who knows how to work on a Model T, or knows how to drive one, the Society could sure use your help with Old Betsy. The Lamorinda Spirit Van
We are very grateful to the Spirit Van drivers for providing free pick-up and delivery service for our passengers, during and after the Shelter-in-Place order. Email [email protected] or call 925-283-3534 if you need something picked up and delivered or to learn about utilizing GoGoGrandparent: an Uber/Lyft type of service that doesn’t require a smart phone. We will resume transporting Lamorinda older adults to errands, shopping, appointments, classes, and lunch at the C.C. Café as soon as we have a few more drivers. Lamorinda Village is Supporting our Seniors
During this pandemic, we have provided over 1000 free shopping/pharmacy deliveries to all Lamorinda Seniors. We have made over 1500 check-in calls (so crucial during this heatwave/smoke/fire threat). We have offered at least 4 zoom activities, presentations, conversations a week to alleviate the loneliness of sheltering at home for so long. We have stuffed and delivered emergency go bags (see the article in Lamorinda Weekly) and negotiated discounts for back up batteries in advance of the inevitable blackouts. For the November Elections, we have a team of volunteers ready to deliver signed and sealed ballots to the ballot boxes for Lamorinda housebound seniors. Lamorinda Village has a Shelter-in-Place Program for Seniors with free grocery delivery and pharmacy pick up. We are a local nonprofit organization created by older adults and supported by volunteers dedicated to helping older Lamorinda residents who want to remain safely and independently in their homes.

Since the pandemic hit, Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa has increased meal service 62% due to the rise in need from the community. To help meet the increase in need, Martinez and Pittsburg dining rooms are now serving meals 7 days a week. (Antioch, Oakley and Walnut Creek are still serving 5 days a week.) Are you interested in giving a Senior Citizen or Veteran a ride to his or her medical appointment? Can you spare a few hours a week? You will be able to make your own schedule. If so, this volunteer opportunity is perfect for you! Our volunteers give rides to individuals who cannot use other forms of transportation due to mobility issues. Monument Crisis Center

Special Education Enrichment Development Foundation
SEED would like to extend a warm welcome and introduction for new families! SEED is the Special Education Enrichment Development Foundation - a Lafayette-based, volunteer-run, non-profit community organization dedicated to supporting the Special Ed community.
We serve families whose children have an IEP, 504, or who are simply struggling. SEED builds productive relationships between our parents and with our District, and provides targeted programming to address diverse learning needs. The programs we fund include recess facilitation, after school social skills play groups, educational seminars, support groups and socials for parents, and teacher training. During this time of social distancing, we are currently focused on producing parent education workshops via Zoom and providing resources via our Facebook page, website and email newsletter. Wells Of Life, Inc.
Wells Of Life is a 501(c)(3) that drills water wells and teaches sanitation and hygiene in rural Uganda, where one out of five children die from dirty water before their fifth birthday. As a part of the fight against COVID-19, the charity is also distributing soap and surgical masks to hospitals, orphanages and senior living facilities. White Pony Express: Serving Our Unhoused Neighbors with Love & Dignity
We have learned from the experiences of our partner agencies and those we serve that people experiencing homelessness need long-term, predictable access to basic needs like clothing. White Pony Express (WPE) is helping our partner agencies expand their capacity to serve unsheltered people by offering clothing and other survival items through our mobile Clothing & Care Closets.
Rising rents, healthcare, food, and utility costs are changing the face of homelessness. Unhoused people are the working poor, young families, retired seniors, people with medical-related disabilities, and college students. Often they are living unhoused in neighborhoods where they once owned a home or rented an apartment. Now they are surviving in cars, RVs and tents.
WPE’s objective is to distribute new or premium lightly used clothing for free to anyone in need with no questions asked. We will treat closet recipients as our guests and support them with love and dignity, offering only our best.
We are looking for individuals and businesses to sponsor a Closet. Each Clothing & Care Closet costs approximately $12,000 to stock and operate annually. The White Pony General Store also welcomes donations (by apt) of new and like new clothing and shoes at our Vincent Road location in Pleasant Hill. We set up an Amazon Wish List where you can shop from the comfort of home for the clothing needed by the people and agencies we serve.

Lafayette Homeowners Council: Meet the Candidates Nights!
The Lafayette Homeowners Council (LHC) Board of Directors, in conjunction with the coming November election, invites you to attend what our Board considers to be one of the most important programs that we are fortunate to be able to bring to you – our Candidates Night.
This particular Candidates Night will, as usual, focus on our local contested elections but, in order to do justice to all of the candidates for the three Boards on which we believe that Lafayette residents most often focus, there will be two Candidates Nights, rather than just one. These events also include Q and A sessions.
These two Candidates Nights will be presented over two meetings. These will be ZOOM type webinar meetings, brought to you in your own home. The first, on October 1, starts at 7:00 p.m., with presentations from the four candidates for the three open Lafayette City Council seats: Cam Burks, Carl Anduri, Gina Dawson and Farschad Farsan.
The second Candidates Night will be in two parts, conducted in succession, on Tuesday, October 6. We will start the first part of the meeting at 7 p.m., with presentations by the four candidates for the two contested seats for the Governing Board of the Acalanes Union High School District – Michael Bonino, Kristin Braun Connelly, Rupy Ahluwalia Krishnan, and Christopher Grove.
At approximately 8:15 p.m., we will introduce the three candidates for Debora Allen’s seat, District 1, covering the northern half of Lafayette – Debora Allen, who is running again, and two challengers, Jamie Salcido and Emmy Akin.

Ballot Drop Off Boxes
The County issued a list of drop off ballot box locations this week. Please note that there is only one location in Lafayette: the Lafayette School District Office at 3477 School Street. You can read the full list of County ballot drop off box locations here.
Need Help Delivering Your Ballot? Lamorinda Village, a non-profit organization supporting older adults in our community, will have a team of volunteers who will take your signed and sealed ballots and drop them off at an official ballot box. Lamorinda Cities Launch Community Information Portal
The portal allows residents to locate Covid and wildfire related resources in and around Lamorinda. Residents can find information about medical offices, social services, food (groceries and take-out), parks and recreation opportunities, pet services and home/auto supplies by visiting the portal. If they enter a home address, they can create a list of services organized by distance from home. Clicking on a business or service in the list locates the business on a new map and provides a link to create directions using the Waze application.
The intent of the portal is to continue to support our residents during the stay at home order and make finding community resources easier. The portal also provides links to Covid-19 information from the State of California and Contra Costa County Health Services.

#BeKind21 Food Drive
The City of Lafayette, Lafayette Chamber, Lafayette School District, and Lafayette Social partnered with Born This Way Foundation for the third year to practice 21 days of being KIND to each other. In addition to our 21 examples of sharing kindness we built a community exercise to collect food for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano.
Your donations totaled 2000lbs! Thank you! This is enough to supply well over 1500 meals to our community! Thank you to the businesses that collected and promoted and to you, our community, who donated!
