The International Film Showcase
Starting July 3 we are bringing you two murder mysteries from France/Belgium and Italy.
A Girl with A Bracelet (France/Belgium)
Lise (16 years old) is accused of murdering her best friend. As the trial starts, her parents stand right by her side. But once her secret life is revealed in court, the truth becomes indistinguishable. “I love you” means nothing. Everyone says “I love you”. A young girl called to the witness stand casually drops these disarmingly simple words that are enough to give one chills. That is a recurring feeling throughout this unusually precise courtroom drama, where words and their power are at the center of attention. In this case, the legal proceedings become the ritual of a society putting its own youth on trial.

The Invisible Witness (Italy)
A locked-room mystery with a twist: A slickly successful businessman wakes up next to his dead lover and becomes the chief suspect. His defense lawyer’s never lost a case, but can even she help him? “When I woke up, the nightmare began.” So begins the account of Adriano Doria (Riccardo Scamarcio), a wealthy Italian entrepreneur, describing the murky events of the worst night of his life, when he discovers himself in a resort hotel room with a nasty cut on his forehead and the lifeless body of his young mistress, Laura (Miriam Leone), lying on the floor amidst a pile of scattered banknotes. Though he protests his innocence, Adriano is the obvious prime suspect. With just hours to go before his arrest, he arranges a meeting with Virginia Ferrara (Maria Paiato), a notoriously tough attorney who has never lost a case, to plan his defense strategy and find evidence to exonerate him. Largely told in flashback, this noirish thriller from director Stefano Mordini recreates the days of intrigue that lead up to that terrible night as guilt-ridden Adriano, still in love with his wife, tries to break off the affair with Laura while on a clandestine trip to the mountainous Trentino region—until fate intervenes and forever alters their lives. As more facts are coaxed out by Virginia, the characters’ motivations begin to blur until no one is quite who they first seemed, leading to a pulse-pounding conclusion that will leave audiences guessing until the final shot. (SIFF 2019).

Assistance League of Diablo Valley Awards $134,750 in Scholarships
Emotional Support + Financial Support = A Better World!
Since 1999, Assistance League® of Diablo Valley’s Scholarships program, co-chaired by Lesley Salo and Cindi Segale, has provided financial and emotional support to high school, community college, university students and returnees to the academic community. Each applicant has expressed a desire to advance through education by maintaining a designated grade point average, volunteering in campus and community projects, and charting an academic timeline.
As in previous years, worthy candidates documented both their academic and community achievements with transcripts and letters of recommendation. However, the interview phase, which gives the Scholarships Committee members invaluable insights as to how these aspiring anthropologists, engineers, nurses, performing artists and physicians have defied overwhelming challenges to realize their dreams, was absent due to the COVID-19 virus.
Likewise, the awards ceremony where Scholarships recipients acknowledged the generosity of foundations, individual donors (chapter members included) and revenue earned at the Assistance League Thrift Shop at the Way Side Inn, the chapter’s primary fundraiser located in Lafayette, were absent. Also absent was Scholarships recipients’ collective message, “…the emotional support that they will cherish enhances the very much appreciated financial support.”
Congratulations to all recipients. Scholarships Committee members look forward to following the additional accomplishments of these remarkable students in the ensuing years. To learn more about the Scholarships program, as well as Assistance League of Diablo Valley’s other philanthropic programs, please visit

Support the Lafayette Library and Learning Center
The Lafayette Library and Learning Center needs your support. Deep cuts to public funding for the Library threaten the professional staff, resources, programs, and services the community relies on. Please make a donation, or monthly recurring gift, today in support of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center. Donations can be made securely online at

Meals on Wheels Diablo Region - Serving the Community Through Tennis – How one Lafayette Teen Saw Opportunity in the Pandemic
When Covid-19 completely rearranged Jake Hammerman’s summer plans, he could have just dwelled on the inconvenience…but instead, he saw it as an opportunity to make a positive impact. Jake and his friends chose to spend their summer giving back to the community through the sport of tennis. They founded Impactful Tennis, which allows high school varsity tennis players to offer tennis lessons to younger kids, in exchange for a donation to
Meals on Wheels Diablo Region.
“I’m interested in food-related causes, and I have grandparents and know how scary and dangerous this pandemic is for people their age,” said Jake. “Also, there will be lots of kids home this summer. Giving tennis lessons gets them out of the house getting exercise and learning great skills.”
Impactful Tennis has already raised over $5,000 that will provide meals for vulnerable seniors in Contra Costa County. You can help Jake and his team reach their goal at:

SHELTER, Inc.’s COVID-19 Hotline helps families in need
Help
SHELTER, Inc. help those who are struggling to stay in their homes.
As one of the leading homeless service providers in the Bay Area, SHELTER, Inc. launched a COVID-19 Hotline in April to help those vulnerable families and individuals who need assistance with rent, utility bills, and basic necessities. Modeled after SHELTER, Inc.’s Eviction Prevention Hotline, SHELTER, Inc. saw a 300 percent increase in calls since the shelter-in-place order began.
Over $200,000 has been distributed to families and individuals in need since April. With unemployment in the county estimated at nearly 15 percent--people are struggling and need help more than ever. The emergency assistance through SHELTER, Inc. is helping community members throughout Contra Costa County stay in their homes. Even as the local economy begins to reopen, the full recovery may take months and potentially even years. To ensure that no family has to endure the trauma of homelessness, SHELTER, Inc. aims to raise $110,000 by the fiscal year-end on June 30. Thanks to a generous donation from the Gemmer and Quest Foundations, each dollar will be matched up to $110,000. Please consider donating today as we work together to prevent and end homelessness.

White Pony Express -
Thousands of USDA “Farmers to Families” Food Boxes are Being Delivered to California Food Rescue Group
Just weeks ago, hundreds of tons of fresh produce were rotting in farmers’ fields due to COVID-19’s impact on the restaurant and hotel industries. Meanwhile millions of people without jobs were struggling to find food. White Pony Express, among the largest food rescue non-profit organizations in northern California, experienced this disruption in the food chain firsthand.
Fortunately, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) quickly set up an emergency program called “Farmers to Families Food Box” to help farmers, food distributors, and hungry families. Now, two food distributors are shipping thousands of these food boxes to White Pony Express (WPE) for day-of distribution to homeless shelters, senior centers, churches, and schools serving low-income children and their families.
WPE is incorporating these food boxes into its food rescue program to meet the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the last 7 years, volunteer-powered WPE has been rescuing surplus food from supermarkets and food distributors and delivering it free of charge to agencies serving those with the greatest need. Since COVID-19 hit, and due to partnerships like these, WPE has been able to distribute three times as much food per day to feed the growing number of hungry people.
Read more here.
White Pony Express’ COVID-19 Care Campaign is in the
homestretch. 92% of our matching challenge has been raised… Two more days and $25,000 to go!
Our goal is $300,000, all donations matched by our Angel Donors through Tuesday, June 30th at 11:59pm EST. Every heart helps.

Lamorinda Cities Launch Covid-19 Community Information Portal
The Lamorinda Cities and Fire Districts in cooperation with Bay Area-based Zonehaven have released the Covid-19 Community Information Portal at
https://ccc.community.zonehaven.com
.
The portal allows residents to locate Covid-related resources in and around Lamorinda. Residents can find information about medical offices, social services, food (groceries and take-out), parks and recreation opportunities, pet services and home/auto supplies by visiting the portal. If they enter a home address, they can create a list of services organized by distance from home. Clicking on a business or service in the list locates the business on a new map and provides a link to create directions using the Waze application.
The intent of the portal is to continue to support our residents during the stay at home order and make finding community resources easier. The portal also provides links to Covid-19 information from the State of California and Contra Costa County Health Services.
If any non profits/organizations could be listed as COVID-19 resources, they can be added to the Zonehaven website map, even if they are outside of Lafayette. Contact Duncan Seibert at
manager@lamorindacert.org
for additional information.
