Support the LGBTQ+ Community Through Powerful Questions
The safe space of a coaching conversation offers fertile ground for members of the LGBTQ+ community to feel seen, heard, understood, and supported. Upon this foundation of connection and respect, a student can think through what drives them, try out actions that promote the learning they want, continue to learn who they are, and move toward their own authentic future.
Coaches who provide this no-judgment, respectful space are participating in productive allyship. Allies can always learn more, becoming even more skilled "believing mirrors" through growing in understanding. This post from the LGBTQ+ Center at Kent State University is a great place to start. Coaches, as you consider how to show up for the LGBTQ+ students in your community, turn your coaching focus on yourself, and ask questions like these:
- What are my biases about different members of the LGBTQ+ community, and how can I challenge them?
- What assumptions come to mind when a student from the LGBTQ+ community comes to me for coaching? What are the consequences of letting those assumptions go unchecked? How can I notice them without judgment and set them aside?
- Who in my life challenges limiting beliefs about members of the LGBTQ+ community, and what can I continue to learn from this human connection?
- How can I learn more this month to become a more intentional ally?
