Students often ask me what my favorite book is. That is a difficult question, but most of my favorite titles can be found in the children's section of the library. Over the course of my 34 years teaching elementary school, I have shared countless picture and chapter books with "my kids." I love to stop reading at the end of a chapter only to have the kids groan and beg for just one more page. When I am not teaching or reading, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, traveling, spending time in nature, listening to live music, and cheering on The Fighting Irish. I am excited to be the newest member of the library board. Our community is so fortunate to have this valuable resource in our hometown.

SARAH RECOMMENDS . . .

Demon Copperhead

by Barbara Kingsolver

From the first page, this book hooked me with its fun language ("coming out inside the fetus ziplock") and characters you feel like you've always known. It's the coming-of-age story of our hero, Demon -- a foster kid who meets all kinds of adventure and unsavory characters as he is shuttled between homes. The story parallels Charles Dickens' David Copperfield and explores institutional poverty and addiction in rural Appalachia, so there's lots to think about here . . . But somehow through all that, it manages to keep a light and hopeful tone. This is the best book I've read in a long time!
