Dear New Hope Community,

As we move into the lazy days of summer, may we remember to take care of ourselves. Grief is hard work, and it is so very important to practice self-care. You are no good to anyone else if you are not good to yourself.

As we begin a new season, take time to savor beautiful sights, sounds, and smells blooming all around us. The beautiful greens of gardens, the fragrances from freshly blooming flowers, and nature’s creatures’ callings as they come and go. These are just a few of nature’s summer treats to enjoy and which can provide therapeutic benefits. Grief can take a toll on us emotionally, mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually. While grieving, taking care of yourself is important, getting enough exercise, proper nutrition, rest, prayer/meditation, and connecting with others. We are humans, and not meant to grieve alone.

New Hope is here to help connect you with others who have experienced losses. We have 23 Ongoing Loss Groups that run on a regular basis and are free to participants, no registration is required. Additionally, New Hope will host the “Beginning the Grief Journey Seminar” on August 21, 2023, and the “From Grief to New Hope” 8-week Workshop, September 18- November 6, 2023. Check out our programs and register at www.newhopecenter.net

Mark your calendars as July 20-21, 2023, New Hope will be hosting “Tackling Grief” with New Hope Kid’s Camp.” If you’re interested in donating supplies (click here for link) or volunteering to serve bereaved children (click here for more information).

May the lazy days of summer help you find ways to bring you hope despite the pain of losing someone you love. Allow yourself time to feel the emotions and reactions as you grieve so healing can begin. And as time heals, may you experience life-changing new beginnings.

Blessings,

Jennifer Frush

Past Programming Highlights

Shake It Off

March 24, 2023

At this Family Friday, we channeled our inner dance moves to help add healthy activities to our toolbox in coping with grief. Exercise and movement trigger our feel-good endorphins, which release positive feelings. We had 20 kids join us on the dance floor to “shake off their grief.”

Superpowers Seminar

April 14, 2023

Together we learned how to respond to grief and loss through the stories of our favorite superheroes. We learned even in our grief, we have special superpowers:

  • Strength – like Captain Marvel
  • Courage – like Black Panther
  • Resilience – like The Flash
  • Compassion – like Spiderman

Our children were joined by our favorite community superheroes we all know and love our Police Officers and special guests Batman and Spiderman!

Grow Your Seed of Happiness

May 19, 2023

Each child designed their own planter and chose seeds or flowers to plant to watch grow. Caring for plants helps instill a sense of calm and confidence. We discussed how each one of them will grow because of their grief and life experiences.

Spring 8-Week Workshop Recap:

The “From Grief to New Hope” 8-Week

Workshop has been an important part of our services from the very beginning. This workshop has grown from its humble beginnings to now serving over 175 grievers with 96% of attendees interested in seeking additional support through our ongoing support groups, seminars, and workshops. This spring, 46 volunteer facilitators committed their time and energy to provide a safe space for those grieving the loss of a loved one to share their stories, connect with others going through similar experiences, and find together find hope, healing, and new beginnings. It was so exciting to see that 100% of facilitators would recommend this workshop to a friend of colleague.

Fundraising Efforts

"Celebration of Hope" Fundraising Gala:

Over 260 guests joined us at our "Celebration of Hope" Fundraising Gala on May 5, 2023, together we raised $75,628 to benefit New Hope Center for Grief Support. It was a fun and festive evening. Mayor Turnbull our Northville mayor joined us, as well as Erica Francis from Fox 2 Detroit who volunteers with our Family Friday Programming. We heard incredible stories from Lindsey Wilson and his daughter Waverly, and Tori and Richard Luckett as they shared how New Hope has impacted their families.

Thank you, to our MC Kurt David, the sponsors, volunteers, donors, and everyone that came out to help support the mission of bringing hope, healing, and new beginnings.

Your support saves lives, as Richard Luckett shared: "Thank you all for loving us and allowing my family to heal, breathe and

re-calibrate during one of the most difficult times of our life." Because of our involvement, New Hope can continue to provide free grief support services to grievers in our community.
