Child Welfare Services reached out to our team to support a family in crisis after they left a shelter with three minors. During this challenging time, we partnered with Stand Up Placer to walk alongside María, helping her take legal steps to ensure her family could safely remain in their home.
Our team continued to support her as she navigated her visa process, providing guidance, support letters, and accompaniment to appointments. In time, she was granted her visa, opening the door to new opportunities.
María had long dreamed of becoming a beautician. With her new work authorization, she completed the necessary requirements and proudly opened her own salon. Today, she works there herself and rents out three stations to other professionals.
Looking ahead, she hopes to one day open a nonprofit organization to support women escaping domestic violence and help them on their journey toward safety, stability, and independence.

16-Week Spanish Language Parent Project Course
Are you a parent navigating the challenges of raising children in a bicultural environment? Parent Project is a 16-week course designed to support families through practical tools, community connection, and meaningful growth. Throughout the course, parents explore topics such as healthy communication, youth mental health, and substance use in a supportive, culturally informed setting. While parents learn, their children participate in parallel youth groups focused on leadership, self-esteem, and resilience.
Our next cohort will begin on January 13th, 2026 in Lincoln!
Here’s what past participants have shared:
“I have participated in Parent Project two times during the different life stages of my children, and in each class, I have learned different tools to continue communicating better with my children.” — Maria
“We have brought all our children to these Parent Project classes. We as a family have learned how to better communicate with each other and find solutions for our family’s differences.” — Sara
If you're looking to build stronger relationships at home and connect with other families on a similar journey, the Parent Project could be the perfect next step.

| | This month, children practiced reading, letter recognition, and writing their names during daily learning circles. They celebrated special themed days such as Penguin Day and Reindeer Day. Children explored creativity through hands-on art projects, including paper plate penguins and reindeer, footprint art for infants, and a winter-in-a-jar activity. Students also enjoyed a Christmas party and a potluck, building social connections and celebrating the season together. At Mami y Yo, December was filled with learning, creativity, and joyful holiday experiences. | | |
