August 2025 Newsletter

Established in 2007 as a public, nonprofit organization, the Latino Leadership Council seeks to advance cultural strength, leadership, and well-being within the Latino Community.

In this issue, we’re excited to share highlights from inspiring client stories, promotora highlight and events we attended that continue to strengthen our impact across the region.

Client Impact Story

"Isabel" received a difficult diagnosis of gestational diabetes late in her pregnancy. At a recent doctor's visit, she learned she would need to undergo a C-section, sparking feelings of anxiety and stress. As a single parent to a six-year-old son, Isabel immediately began to worry about how she would care for her son while in recovery. She worried about who would help with meals, transportation, and school, as she was unable to drive.

To help ease Isabel’s concerns, one of our promotoras stepped in to offer personalized support. She encouraged Isabel to speak with her son’s teacher to request schoolwork he could complete from home and helped her notify the school office about his expected absence for at least a week. The promotora also coordinated with our supervisor and accounting team to request emergency grocery support. As a result, Isabel received grocery assistance. Our team purchased easy-to-prepare foods her son could eat on his own or with minimal help, including peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, oatmeal, yogurt, milk, fruit, and corn dogs.

Isabel was deeply moved by the support and sent us this heartfelt message of gratitude:

“Estoy muy agradecida con todos los servicios ofrecidos, y por toda la comida que le dieron a mi niño en estos momentos difíciles. Muchas gracias.”

“I am very grateful for all the services offered and for all the food you gave my son during this difficult time. Thank you so much.”

This kind of thoughtful support not only helps meet a family’s basic needs but also provides peace of mind during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Promotora Highlight

This month, we’re proud to highlight Kelita Alvarez, a dedicated Promotora and key member of the Latino Leadership Council team. Kelita brings passion, empathy, and cultural connection to her work with families, especially through her role in our Mami y Yo program.

In Kelita’s words: “What inspires me most is seeing how our families connect, how children learn through play, and how mothers become empowered. Mami y Yo is not just a program, it’s a community.”

Through her guidance, Mami y Yo has become a welcoming space where children grow through learning and play, and parents build confidence, connection, and a sense of belonging. Kelita’s work truly reflects LLC’s mission to uplift and support Latino families through culturally grounded programs and compassionate care.

Thank you, Kelita, for the heart and leadership you bring to our community every day!

Board and Staff Game Day Retreat

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our board members for organizing a fun and engaging team-building day filled with games, laughter, and bonding. These board and team gatherings, which we hold a few times each year, are an important part of strengthening our relationships and shared commitment to the work we do.

“Promotores are the heart of our work in the community, and this retreat was designed to honor their dedication while providing meaningful tools for self-care, renewed purpose, and collective strength. We’re so grateful for everything our Promotores contribute and proud to continue investing in their well being as they uplift and empower others every day.” – Sandra Reyes, LLC Board President

Youth Ambassadors in Action

Our Youth Ambassadors recently met with the marketing team to develop key talking points for our upcoming Día de los Muertos celebration. These youth-led messages will be shared on 102.5 KSFM, helping promote the event across the region and invite the broader community to take part. As part of their leadership and outreach efforts, the Youth Ambassadors also recorded a bilingual invitation video, highlighting the cultural significance of the event and encouraging others to join in honoring loved ones, tradition, and community. We’re proud of their initiative and the role they continue to play in shaping the way our culture and voices are shared!

Youth Ambassador Spotlight

Our Youth Ambassador, Ava De La Torre, is launching Building Support, a community-driven project aimed at providing care packages and legal resource materials to immigrant families in need.

With your support, Ava will assemble reusable bags filled with:

  • Hygiene products
  • Menstrual supplies
  • Reusable water bottles
  • Multilingual Know-Your-Rights information

These bags will offer families both immediate relief and long-term support. As a thank you, individual and organizational donors will have the option to include their name or logo on the bags, publicly recognizing their role in uplifting our community. Let’s come together to promote justice, compassion, and community care.

Parent Project

Interested in Strengthening Your Family Through the Parent Project?

Are you a parent navigating the challenges of raising children in a bicultural environment? The Parent Project is a 16-week course designed to support families like yours through practical tools, community connection, and meaningful growth. Throughout the course, parents explore topics such as healthy communication, youth mental health, substance use, and gang prevention in a supportive, culturally informed setting. While parents learn, their children participate in parallel youth groups focused on leadership, self-esteem, and resilience.

Our next cohort will be offered virtually, making it even more accessible for families with busy schedules or transportation challenges.

Here’s what past participants have shared:

“I have participated in Parent Project two times during the different life stages of my children, and in each class, I have learned different tools to continue communicating better with my children.” — Maria
“We have brought all our children to these Parent Project classes. We, as a family, have learned how to better communicate with each other and find solutions for our family’s differences.” — Sara

If you're looking to build stronger relationships at home and connect with other families on a similar journey, the Parent Project could be the perfect next step.

Lincoln Mami y Yo

In partnership with First 5 Placer, our Mami y Yo program provides a welcoming space for parents and caregivers of children ages 0 to 5. Participants come together to build community, share experiences, and learn more about early childhood development.

A public health nurse and other guest specialists regularly join sessions to answer questions and offer guidance on topics related to child health and well-being.

This month, families enjoyed special activities including a puppet show, water day, and the opportunity to receive free items for participating moms. These events not only provide fun and relief but also help strengthen bonds between families in our community.

Healthy Family Fitness Festival

The Latino Leadership Council was proud to attend the Healthy Families Fitness Festival, hosted by the Sierra Community Medical Foundation. This vibrant community event brought together families for a day focused on health, wellness, and connection.

Participants enjoyed free backpacks and school supplies, group workouts, sports clinics, yoga sessions, healthy food, and more. Our team had the opportunity to connect with families, share resources, and promote wellness in a fun and energetic setting.
