Established in 2007 as a public, nonprofit organization, the Latino Leadership Council seeks to advance cultural strength, leadership, and well-being within the Latino Community.

A Dream Turned Reality
For Isabel, this journey was never just about starting a business. It was about learning how to believe in herself again. When she arrived to this country, she carried big dreams but also the weight of being told no. Over time, those words made her question what was possible. Like many in our community, she had the drive and the ideas, but not always the support or confidence to take the next step. That began to change when she signed up for the Small Business Classes hosted by the Latino Leadership Council.
From the very beginning, she felt something different. She was surrounded by people who understood her story, encouraged her, and reminded her that her goals mattered. Through each class, she learned how to start a business with confidence, understand licenses and permits, organize her finances, build her brand identity, and create a competitive presence in the digital market. These sessions gave her more than business knowledge; they gave her clarity, direction, and confidence to move forward with her business idea.
There were still moments of doubt, moments where fear made her question if she was ready, but she did not have to go through it alone. Her peers believed in her, even when she struggled to believe in herself. That support is what made all the difference.
Little by little, her vision started to take shape. What once felt out of reach became something real, and she began to trust her abilities and take action toward her goals. Now, she is preparing to launch her catering business this May. This achievement represents growth, courage, and the decision to keep going despite uncertainty. It is proof that her dreams were always possible.
Her journey shows what can happen when someone is given the right support and resources to grow. Programs like our Small Business Class will continue to make a real impact in the community, helping individuals turn their ideas into action. This is only the beginning of what she will accomplish.

Since January, this incredible cohort has shown up with commitment, put in the work, and invested in their dreams. We proudly celebrated the graduation of our very first business cohort.
Over the past few months, they’ve built a strong foundation for success learning how to confidently launch their businesses, navigate licenses and permits, develop their brand identity, establish accounting systems, and create a competitive presence in the digital market.
Through dedication, growth, and the power of community, these entrepreneurs are now equipped to turn their visions into reality. This is more than a program, it’s the start of something bigger.

| | Dr. Reyes Ortega Scholarship Fund Applications Now Open! | |
The Board of Directors and staff at the Latino Leadership Council (LLC) recently established the Dr. Reyes Ortega Scholarship Fund at Placer Community Foundation (PCF), in honor of his long-standing social justice activism, teachings, mentorship, and community service.
Dr. Ortega serves on LLC's Board and is Professor Emeritus at Sierra College. Twice awarded as Faculty of the Year, Dr. Ortega was additionally honored as the recipient of the inaugural Excellence in Equity Award. He taught Chicana/o Studies and Chicano/Mexican American History and was instrumental in the successful design of the Sierra College Associate Degree in Chicana and Chicano Studies. Furthermore, while serving as an academic and personal counselor, Dr. Ortega introduced and co-coordinated the nationally acclaimed Puente Program at Sierra College, which maximizes academic access and success in higher education.

The Latino Leadership Council is excited to once again partner with Tahoe Rim Trail Association to offer Entre Amigos Backpacking, a unique outdoor leadership experience for Latino youth ages 12–17. This four-day adventure in South Lake Tahoe provides participants the opportunity to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and connect with nature while forming meaningful friendships.
Throughout the week, youth will learn essential backcountry skills including map navigation, wilderness survival, Leave No Trace ethics, and local ecology, all while working together as a team in a supportive and encouraging environment.
This experience is limited to only 12 participants, making it a truly special and personalized opportunity. Spots fill quickly, we encourage families to apply early. Registration packets are due May 20, 2026.

Thanks to funding from the Placer Community Foundation, we were able to help local families cover the cost of spay and neuter services for their beloved pets. This assistance not only eased a financial burden but also promoted responsible pet ownership and helped prevent future unwanted litters.
Support like this creates a meaningful impact in our community by keeping pets healthy, reducing overpopulation, and ensuring animals remain safe and cared for in loving homes. Through this funding, we are able to continue supporting families while promoting the well-being of both pets and our community.

Throughout the month of April, children in Mami y Yo met each week to build early literacy and developmental skills through circle time activities focused on reading, number recognition, learning the days of the week, and practicing how to spell and write their names. Shared reading activities continued to encourage language development and foster a love for books in a fun and supportive environment.
This month also included exciting themed learning experiences and celebrations such as Easter, Farm Day, Earth Day, and Día del Niño. Children participated in engaging hands on art and sensory activities including chicken and egg crafts, rabbit footprint art, nature hunt activities, handprint Earth projects, and colorful butterfly creations using coffee filters and sensory bags.
Through creative play, themed learning, and interactive group activities, Mami y Yo continued to provide enriching educational experiences that supported literacy, creativity, social interaction, and early childhood development in an engaging and age appropriate setting.

Throughout the month, Entre Amigos and Entre Chiquillos continued providing engaging spaces for youth to build friendships, develop confidence, and strengthen leadership skills through weekly group activities and discussions. Participants met regularly to connect with peers, participate in team building activities, and engage in positive community centered experiences.
This month also included Youth Leadership JEDI Training, where youth had the opportunity to further develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills in a supportive and empowering environment. Through interactive activities and meaningful conversations, participants continued building confidence while strengthening their connection to their peers and community.
Entre Amigos and Entre Chiquillos remain dedicated to creating safe and welcoming spaces that encourage personal growth, leadership development, and positive youth engagement.
