The Board of Directors and staff at the Latino Leadership Council (LLC) recently established the Dr. Reyes Ortega Scholarship Fund at Placer Community Foundation (PCF) in honor of Dr. Ortega’s long-standing social justice activism, teachings, and mentorship.
Dr. Ortega serves on LLC’s Board and is Professor Emeritus at Sierra College where he teaches Chicana/o Studies and Chicano/Mexican American History. He was also instrumental in successfully designing the Sierra College Associate Degree in Chicana and Chicano Studies. Furthermore, while serving as an academic and personal counselor, Dr. Ortega introduced and co-coordinated the nationally acclaimed Puente Program at Sierra College, which maximizes access and promotes academic success in higher education.
“I am so very fortunate to serve on LLC’s Board and to have engaged as a practitioner of community service through LLC,” Dr. Ortega states. “Through education, health, and youth development, LLC carries the enormous responsibility of welcoming and introducing nuestra comunidad Latina [our latin community] to the complexities and benefits of life in the United States. This gargantuan task cannot be achieved without the genuine commitment and dedication of an incredible staff and Board of Directors. Si Se Puede!”

Gillian, a single mother of two young children—one of whom has a developmental disability—has faced numerous challenges in her life. As a domestic violence survivor, she sought refuge and support through organizations like Stand-Up Placer, which assisted her with applying for a U-Visa. However, the $1,500 fee for the U-Visa was a significant burden, causing her to fall behind on basic bills, including rent. Despite working as much as she could while caring for her children, the strain took a toll.
When Gillian reached out to the Latino Leadership Council for help, her situation was met with immediate compassion. The LLC quickly connected her with our partners at the Assistance League of Greater Placer. That same day, the ALGP provided $400 in financial assistance, while a partner personally chipped in $200. The LLC also stepped in, offering $1,000 directly to Gillian’s landlord to help cover her rent. Additionally, a family member contributed $375 to further support her. But the support didn’t end there. The ALGP went above and beyond by personally contacting Gillian's landlord to explain her financial hardship and request the removal of late fees. Remarkably, the landlord agreed to waive them.
Thanks to the combined efforts of the Latino Leadership Council, Assistance League, and the generosity of those around her, Gillian was able to catch up on her rent and avoid the risk of losing her home. This outpouring of support also ensured that Gillian would have access to assisted living for the coming months, providing her with the stability she needed to care for her children and continue rebuilding her life.

YEAGA 17th Annual Food & Toy Run | |
On December 7, 2024, the Youth Empowerment and Goals Association (YEAGA) program held its 17th annual Adopt a Family Food and Toy Run. This extraordinary group of individuals is comprised of retired correctional staff, ex-felons, and community volunteers, who come together to discuss consequences, teach life skills, and empower young adults to live a productive lifestyle. The Latino Leadership Council proudly connected our clients with YEAGA to sponsor a few of our families, providing food, toys, and bicycles during this holiday season. | |

Our Mami y Yo group in Lincoln finished the year with a festive Posada celebration, as the room was filled with joy, arts and crafts, and delicious food. The mommies and kiddos gathered to share their gratitude and create lasting memories together as they end the year.

Winter Break Youth Pop-Ups | |

Entre Amigos & Chiquillos had a busy December packed with social & general wellness activities. Last month we partnered with Placer County Public Health to train the youth on the importance of restorative sleep and how to implement habits to encourage a healthy sleep cycle.
During the winter break, we also partnered with the Sierra Health Foundation to provide youth pop-ups at Sacramento's Imaginarium & Ice Rink. Our youth often have nothing to do during school breaks, and we must encourage them to remain engaged within their communities. Our Latinx youth tend to miss out on opportunities and experiences because of financial or language barriers. With the support of our partners, WE can eliminate these obstacles and have youth enjoy a night out, without the worry of cost. For those unable to make our in-person events, we also hosted a Virtual Gingerbread House event!
