February 2026 Newsletter

Established in 2007 as a public, nonprofit organization, the Latino Leadership Council seeks to advance cultural strength, leadership, and well-being within the Latino Community.

In this issue, we’re honored to share a powerful client success story, highlights from our community impact work, a board member spotlight, recent events, job openings with trusted partners, and resources that continue to support and uplift Latino families across our region.

Client Story

Alan was referred to our program by Sutter Roseville Medical Center during a critical period in his life. He was experiencing a serious kidney infection that required ongoing medical care and specialist treatment, with an additional surgery still pending. At the time of referral, he also did not have Medi-Cal coverage or an established primary care provider, creating barriers to accessing the care he urgently needed.

Staff supported Alan in applying for Medi-Cal and connecting with a primary care provider at Chapa Health. However, the impact of his illness extended beyond his medical needs. Unable to work, Alan and his family faced increasing financial strain. He lives with his wife and baby, and although their two older children in Mexico provided some support, the family struggled to keep up with basic expenses.

As housing stability became a concern, team members Karen and Celina worked closely with Alan to secure rental assistance. This support helped the family remain housed during a time of medical uncertainty and financial hardship, allowing Alan to focus on his treatment and recovery.

His experience demonstrates how quickly a medical crisis can become a housing crisis without timely intervention. By addressing both health care access and housing stability, the program helped prevent displacement and provided critical stability for the family.

As part of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, our team attended the Red Sand Project, a powerful community art installation where grains of red sand are poured into sidewalk cracks to symbolize the millions of people who fall through the cracks and are commercially sexually exploited.

Our team attended Natomas High School’s 8th Grade Parents Welcome Night and back-to-school events, connecting with students and families while supporting them as they kicked off the new school year.

Mami y Yo

This month, children practiced reading during daily circle time while strengthening skills such as letter recognition, number identification, color recognition, and writing their names. They celebrated special themed days including Owl Day, Snowman Day, and Bear Day. Children also explored creativity through hands-on art projects such as handprint New Year art, handprint snowmen on canvas, paper plate owl collages, and paper plate bear masks. Infants participated in sensory art activities including footprint owls on canvas and bear painting in Ziplock bags. At Mami y Yo, January was filled with learning, creativity, and a joyful New Year celebration.
