US Department of Health & Human Services, Center of Medicare & Medicaid Services will be providing a briefing on the 2022 No Surprise Act. The federal law provides consumer protection against surprise medical bills. If you have private health insurance, these new protections ban the most common types of surprise bills. Cristina Collazo will walk us through the new changes and how to navigate the consumer web portal, to be accessible to the general public.

Gold Country Media Article

Latino Leadership Council's Ernesto Pineda, Board of Directors President, has continuously advocated for our community. This month is no different. Ernesto advocated to discuss a proposal to rescind the District’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement (DEI).
A special thanks to Bill Poindexter, Editor of Gold Mountain California News Media, as the article will be published in the Auburn Journal!
Please take a moment to read our article to find out more about the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement (DEI) below:
Auburn Union School District Upholds Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement
The Auburn Union School District’s Board of Trustees (AUSD) held a public meeting on December 13, 2023 to discuss a proposal to rescind the District’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement (DEI).
There were five (5) board members and roughly forty (40) community members which included the Auburn Union Teachers Association (AUTA), California School Employees Association (CSEA), Latino Leadership Council (LLC) and concerned citizens. Emotions were high as speakers rose to the podium to express their bewilderment and concern over this proposal.
The President of the Board, Greg Holt, initiated the proposal and exerted his influence on the board encouraging the Board to rescind the DEI Statement.
Then, the highlight of the evening occurred. Dr. Reyes Ortega asked the Board, "How does rescinding the diversity statement help our children, and where is the data to support this?" When it came time for the board to discuss the amendment Jamie Ross, a Trustee, asked the board the same question. She proposed a motion not to rescind the Statement. The motion was seconded, and the final vote was 3 against and 2 for rescinding the statement. To the relief of many of us the DEI statement will not be deleted.
Special thanks to the AUSD Board of Trustees, teachers, community members, and in particular Traci Newell, journalist for writing an informative article, “Auburn Union School District possibly removing equity statement…” which helped inform many community members about this divisive proposal.

Promotor at Latino Leadership Council

Jaime Diaz is one of the newest promotores with the Latino Leadership Council but has already done great work with clients. He continues to conduct home visits to assess client needs and connect Latinos to various health, education, housing, domestic violence, and youth development services. Jaime has made it a mission to empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking while educating the community to stand up and take action.

Client Impact

During a difficult time, the Tahual Family asked for the support of our promotores, Bryan Rangel-Alvarez and Lissett Carrasquel, and for assistance with medical appointments. Wilson, (father) has been going through a difficult treatment as he has been a recently confirmed match to donate a kidney to his 15-year-old daughter. For some time now, his daughter has been dealing with kidney failure, causing turbulence within the family.

With the help of the Latino Leadership Council, the Tahual family is being supported with facilitating medical appointments, receiving food assistance, and most recently being sponsored with holiday gifts for the whole family!

“Estoy tan agradecida y bendecida con mis promotores, que nos ayudan tanto durante estos tiempos difíciles.”

With the support from our community we were able to give the Tahual family hope in one of their most challenging times.

Youth Events Calendar

Youth In-Person Events

To close off the year, our youth programs had a Posada at the Washington Neighborhood Center. Youth from both Entre Amigos and Entre Chiquillos were eager to meet in-person one last time, some even meeting each other for the first time outside of zoom. Youth celebrated the holidays by creating crafts, playing games, eating food, and taking home many gifts.

We are grateful to Jocelin Hernandez, Executive Director at The Washington Neighborhood Center for hosting us and being so welcoming. Youth and parents learned about the history of the center and all the upcoming events that will be held there.
