The housing and environmental crises impact so many, and our Latino/a populations are not immune. Herman Barahona with the Sacramento Environmental Justice Coalition will discuss how the history of redlining and the public health consequence of environmental policy decisions are affecting poor people of color in the region.

Leadership with Latinidad

This year we launched our inaugural 8-week Leadership Training program to equip our Latinos/as with the knowledge and skills for their own transformational leadership and the development of those who follow. Our 23 participants are engaging with and supporting each other as they navigate challenges and create positive solutions that benefit our Latino/a communities. We are grateful for the many employers who support this work!

Client Impact

Yuri and her family left Honduras, traveled to Texas and settled in Sacramento with only their clothing and very few personal items. With the help of our Promotora Kelita, they received food, toys, clothes, backpacks for the kids, and other basic needs, but enrolling their 7-year-old and 11-year-old children in school became a challenge as they did not have the necessary vaccinations.

Kelita helped them to get their vaccines and supported them in enrollment meetings with San Juan School District. The children are now enrolled in school, and the family is navigating through the immigration court system. Yuri and her husband are awaiting a positive outcome to continue creating a brighter future for the whole family!

“We are so very happy and filled with joy. Thank you to Kelita and the LLC”

Rancho Los Olivos Nutrition Event

This event took place at a home garden. Clients learned about the medicinal benefits, uses and possible interaction of some herbs that were planted there.

Being in the rancho evoked memories for many participants of their hometowns and childhood.

They put together the "Altar de Muertos" where everyone turned on a candle for their loved ones who passed away and inspired them to keep the tradition of the altar to honor those who have passed.

Participants shared different Latino dishes from Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico. Through sharing a meal, they learned about different traditions and culture.

Families had the opportunity to bring their kids who enjoyed playing in the tree house!

Entre Amigos Kitchen

For our October Entre Amigos virtual cooking class, youth learned how to make snickerdoodle cookies. Many of them expressed this being their first time baking and using their own oven. Youth were anxious to try their creations and learned lessons with patience and followed directions.

On October 27th, Entre Chiquillos held its first ever in-person pop up! The kids had so much fun getting creative and meeting each other in-person for the first time. We will host events throughout the communities to mitigate any transportation barriers they may encounter.
