Women's History Luncheon

Placer County held a National Women’s History Alliance celebrating and honoring impactful women. The celebration included our very own Executive Director, Elisa Herrera, who has been influential in this year’s theme of building bridges for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Client Impact

A young husband struggling to help his ill wife brought Jose and Marlen to the LLC to help them navigate their many challenges.

Marlen joined Jose in the US under political asylum. In addition to navigating asylum requirements with no understanding of the English language or the resources and supports available to her, Marlen was also silently battling Brucellosis disease, which caused multiple debilitating symptoms. Their family’s mental health and well-being was suffering, and Jose was growing increasingly frustrated and fearful as he struggled to find help for his wife but was continuously met with barriers. Their family needed help!

Marlen and Jose were connected to Promotora Yolanda, who successfully established Medi-Cal for the entire family, referred them to legal assistance, and supported them with enrollment in school for their son Mateo. As their life gained stability, Marlen was also connected to a PCP and is now receiving medical treatments that will aid in her road to recovery.

Now, Marlen and Jose are filled with hope and excited for what is to come. They are expecting a baby and are now confident in their ability to reach out for support, are aware of resources in their area, and are well on their way to establishing a thriving life in the U.S. which adds a feeling of safety and security for their growing family.

Their journey highlights the power of community and connection, and how vital our Promotores are in empowering folks who are often trying their best to seek services but facing obstacles that they are unable to navigate. We are grateful to all who continue to partner with us and provide funding to make stories like this possible.

Please enjoy this beautiful picture of Mateo, loving his gifts from his Promotora, Yolanda!

“I was so frustrated I couldn’t help my wife get the medical care she needed, but thanks to LLC and Yolis, we are very happy with all the help she gave us!

Free Community College

Have you heard about California's College Promise Grant?

Graduating seniors from California high schools who are accepted into any of California’s 115 community colleges, such as Sierra College, are eligible for two years of free tuition!

To qualify, they must be first-time, full-time students and take at least 12 units per semester. An estimated 33,000 new students are expected to be eligible for the program. Currently, tuition at community colleges is $46 a unit, or about $1,380 a year for a full-time student.

California's College Promise Grant covers tuition only, however, Cal Grant awards are financial aid programs to cover non-tuition costs, the state is awarding 15,000 new Cal Grant scholarships and most of them will go to community college students. Don't forget to apply for 2024-2025 California Financial Aid also known as FASFA.

The FASFA deadline has been extended to May 2nd so act now!

California Colleges also offer the California Dream Act, which allows undocumented students, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients (valid or expired), U Visa holders, and students under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), who qualify for a non-resident exemption under Assembly Bill 540 (AB 540), to receive community college fee waivers, and Cal Grants. In addition, the California Dream Act, allows eligible students to pay in-state tuition at any public college in California.

Sacramento Health Fair

On March 24th, the LLC partnered with the Sacramento LGBT Community Center to host a health event at their Lavender Heights location. It is a mission within the LLC to ensure health access to not only our Latino community but also Latinos identifying within the LGBT+ community.

We hosted over 30 partners to promote health access within the community. Through this event, we were able to connect with over 70 community members, to provide blood pressure screenings, 9 HIV tests, 17 Flu, Covid-19, and MPox vaccines! The event was a success, and we give a special thank you to the Sacramento LGBT Center for their hard work!
