What is Farm Credit Services of America-Wyoming Region?
Farm Credit Services of America (FCSA) is part of the nationwide Farm Credit System, a network of borrower-owned financial cooperatives that has served rural communities and agriculture for more than a century. In Wyoming, Farm Credit Services provides reliable, agriculture-specific financial services to farmers, ranchers, and rural landowners.
As a cooperative, it’s owned by the very producers it serves, meaning profits are returned to members annually in the form of cash-back dividends.
With deep roots in the agricultural landscape, Farm Credit Services of America is more than a lender—it’s a partner and trusted advisor, committed to the long-term success of Wyoming’s producers.
"We are deeply grateful to FCSA for their steadfast support of Wyoming Agriculture in the Classroom, generously funding our programs through grants and major gifts over the years. WAIC is a better organization because of FCSA's continued support." Andrew Joannides, Executive Director
This month, we interview Rick Griffith (Casper, WY) with FCSA-Wyoming Region, Regional Vice President of Lending.
Q: Why is access to credit so essential for farmers and ranchers, especially in a state like Wyoming?
Agriculture is a capital-intensive business, Rick explains. “Whether you’re buying cattle, machinery, or land, you’re making large, long-term investments. It’s critical to have reliable, ag-specific credit available through lenders who truly understand the business.
In a vast and rural state like Wyoming—where operations are often family-run and span thousands of acres—having access to credit is often what keeps multi-generational operations moving forward.
Without it, even the most experienced producers can struggle to weather challenges like market volatility, drought, or supply chain disruptions."
Q: How does Farm Credit Services of America support the unique financial needs of agricultural producers?
Farm Credit Services of America is designed for agriculture—exclusively. It’s part of a nationwide system regulated by the Farm Credit Administration. Every state is affiliated with a Farm Credit association, and each one is structured as an independent cooperative, with a mission to serve—not profit from—agricultural producers.
This focus means that every financial officer is not just a lender, but a specialist in ag finance—familiar with seasonal cycles, commodity markets, livestock operations, and rural realities.
Q: Can you walk us through how credit helps a beginning farmer or rancher get their start in agriculture?
Getting started in agriculture is no small feat, and Rick is quick to emphasize the importance of scaling smart:
“If you’re just starting out, consider financing only a portion of the operation—for example, buying livestock while leasing land. That’s a practical way to reduce risk and learn the ropes without over extending yourself financially.”
Farm Credit Services works closely with beginning producers to develop business plans, assess cash flow, and offer personalized coaching. Officers build relationships with young ranchers that go beyond transactions—they provide mentorship and tools for long-term sustainability.
“The future of agriculture depends on the success of new producers,” Rick says. “Our job is to walk with them from day one and help them build solid financial foundations.”
Q: What are some of the biggest financing challenges producers face, and how do you help them navigate those?
“The biggest hurdle is often around capital requirements and debt structure,” Rick says. “We work with producers to structure loans in a way that aligns with their cash flows and long-term goals.”
Co-ops like Farm Credit also provide a unique benefit: members receive an annual cash-back dividend based on their participation in the cooperative. “It’s their money—no strings attached. They can reinvest it, pay down debt, or put it toward something personal.”
Rick sees a deep alignment between Farm Credit’s mission and organizations like Wyoming Agriculture in the Classroom.
Both organizations share a belief in stewardship, sustainability, and preparing for the next generation. Whether that’s through education or financial coaching, it’s about preserving the values and viability of rural life.
