Supporting Early Environmental Education

By Savannah Lira, PVF Program Officer

Early environmental education is important for creating environmentally conscious adults, but it is often neglected in underfunded public schools.

PVF’s Environmental Science Resource Grant Program began in 2017 with funding from the Lampert-Byrd Foundation in an effort to address this need by making our popular immediate response teacher grants available for environmental and conservation-focused projects in Alameda County classrooms.

The program was recently expanded through generous support by the Maxwell | Hanrahan Foundation to increase the number of grants available per school, as well as bring Environmental Science grants to all nine Bay Area Counties.

Year after year, we've seen students benefit from these grants by receiving hands-on experiences that enhance their understanding of environmental science topics.

Elementary schools have revitalized or created new gardens to learn about plant life cycles and composting; middle schools have started climate change projects focused on auditing students' individual carbon footprints and addressing ecological impact; and AP Environmental Science high schools have ordered lab kits for wind and energy, decomposition, and biofuel, to enhance students' understanding of wind turbines, decomposition, and alternative fuels.

This is also our only Teacher Resource Grant Program available year round, because learning doesn't stop for everyone over the summer. For those of you teaching on a year-round schedule or summer school, consider taking your students on a well-deserved field trip. Some examples of field trips we have funded include:

If you and another teacher are taking multiple classrooms, we welcome and encourage you to partner together and apply for two grants, totaling $1,000.

Grants are also available for more than just classroom materials and field trips. Any TK-12th grade teacher working at a low-income public school in the Bay Area is eligible for $500 towards their own professional development of environmental science learning.

We at PVF thank the Lampert-Byrd Foundation and Maxwell | Hanrahan Foundation for their generous support of early environmental education.
