Supporting Future Workers Who Can Problem Solve, Pivot, and Persist

Coaching Brings Perspective

Anyone working directly with students in higher education has likely been noticing the rise in anxiety over challenges in the job market. Preparing for post-graduation employment is taking focus earlier and earlier in the college experience. Increasing numbers of first- and second-year students now experience high stress over finding internships, and the pressure to decide early on a career path is a significant driver in the college selection process for many high school students.

Understandably this anxiety continues for college graduates, as detailed in this Business Insider article entitled Why Gen Z college grads are feeling increasingly pessimistic about entering the workforce. The article details how current conditions — including layoffs in once-foolproof fields, decreasing numbers of entry-level jobs, a spike in competition with applicant pools including more experienced workers, and high numbers of applications for individual jobs (driven in part by the ease of applying electronically) — have unnerved young college graduates.

Coaches can have an important role in helping students to maximize the opportunity to learn and to develop their strengths that college provides. What can a coaching conversation or relationship do?

  • Build problem solving and critical thinking capacity. When students are given agency to think through problems and challenges carefully, choose and implement solutions, and evaluate their effectiveness, they build critical thinking skills and initiative that are desirable in any job.

  • Support the ability and willingness to pivot. Change is the only constant and is a feature of any college experience. A student who learns to evaluate learning situations and pivot with a goal in mind will develop flexibility that can help them roll with the punches of the modern job market.

  • Champion persistence. With a coach providing trustworthy support and championing hard work, a student may be more likely to persist through the ups and downs and build self-efficacy that can carry them through similar challenges in their career.
