October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. For countless women within the criminal justice system, their path to incarceration is marked by a history of domestic abuse, a cycle that intertwines victimization and criminalization. These women are not just victims, they are survivors who have faced unimaginable trauma and domestic violence; a tragic thread that connects many of their experiences, pushing them into a cycle of pain and imprisonment.
This October, we honor those whose countless stories of adversity remain untold. These women are not solely defined by the things they have done, but are products of a society that failed to protect them from the very abuse they have gone through.
At The LOHM, we are committed to providing support and empowerment to justice-impacted women. We are honored to partner with HUD to offer the HUD Rapid Rehousing Program. This program will be offered in three states: NYC, New Orleans, and Prince George’s County, Maryland and will assist women with obtaining housing, support for relocation expenses and rental assistance for up to a year. Please check our website in the upcoming months for more information and to register.
Together, we can address the root causes of domestic violence, and continue to foster healing and rehabilitation for incarcerated women. Help us pave the way for a more just and compassionate future where no one is left behind, and the cycle of violence is broken once and for all.
