As your current Representative for Missouri's Fourth District, I have the honor of nominating young men and women to serve in the nation's four military academies. Each year I organize a ceremony to recognize the Fourth District's nominations. One of the powers granted to the federal government is to provide for the common defense. I plan to ensure that any student in the Fourth District who wishes to serve in the armed forces will join a fully-funded military, with the proper equipment and technology necessary for combatting the nation's greatest threats.
This year Congress has passed several reforms to rebuild America's defense. For many legislative sessions, I fought against sequestration cuts. These cuts set the nation on a wrong path and would have reduced the national defense budget by $1 trillion between 2009 and 2023. The 2019 National Defense Authorization Act, which I helped to pass as a member of the House Armed Services Committee, will restore national defense spending so that our military can give troops a pay raise, increase the number of troops, and purchase new aircraft, ships, and vehicles. As the Air Force has planes with outdated parts, I strongly believe Congress must act to improve military readiness and preparedness.
As Chairwoman of the Armed Services Oversights and Investigations Subcommittee, I also work on your behalf to ensure that taxpayer dollars are being spent effectively by defense programs. This year I have led hearings with officials in the Trump Administration to determine if the nation's military strategies have clearly outlined goals, which enable us to successfully deter threats while spending within reasonable means.
The Fourth District is the home to two major installations, Whiteman Air Force Base and Fort Leonard Wood. The men and women serving at these bases have made the courageous decision to serve our country, and our country must support them in their decision. Due to the failed defense policies of the past, Congress must work for several years to repair the military. I humbly ask for your support by visiting www.vickyhartzler.com, so Congress can continuing making positive reforms for our men and women in uniform.
