November 6, 2024
Dear students,
Some of you may have been following the US elections over the past year. Yesterday, November 5, was our official day to vote as a nation for various positions, including the President of the United States. As a result, the government and its priorities will change in January.
How does this impact me?
As an international student in the U.S. on F-1 status, if there are any changes to government policies or rules related to F-1 status, entering the U.S., or taxes, you must follow these new rules.
For many, current events can lead to feelings of uncertainty or stress. We acknowledge that you, your families, and your friends may feel concern. We want to remind you that each employee in the OISS values you and we will continue to support you with programming, regulatory advice, and welcoming spaces. As we navigate any changes together, we want to share some information and remind you of the resources available to you.
How will I know about changes?
The U.S. government system is complex. Sometimes a plan for change can be shared with the public, but processes like court challenges may stop or delay the change. Other times, changes can happen quickly. These factors can make information confusing or can make information outdated quickly.
The OISS will inform you of any changes and how these changes will affect you while you are in F-1 status.
It will be very important for you to read emails from the office carefully and to ask questions when you do not understand the messages.
Here are a few government websites we know to provide accurate information when it comes to your F-1 status:
The internet is full of all kinds of true and false information. When you see things online or hear something from a friend, remember to think carefully about what the message is and to verify this information whenever possible. It is important to know the source of information, especially related to your status. If you have specific concerns, please reach out to the OISS for verification or additional information.
What support is available to me?
The OISS will have an opportunity for students to drop in and ask any questions you may have about the election, or just spend time together in our space.
Friday, November 8 from 11am-1pm at our Sylvania OISS (CC-215).
