HONORING LEGACY, EMPOWERING FUTURES

MAS-SSF is shining a spotlight on Muslim African scholars of the Islamic Golden Age — generally spanning the 8th through 13th centuries — whose pioneering work helped shape early understandings of psychology and mental health. Their scholarship laid important foundations for how we think about human behavior and wellbeing, often centuries ahead of Western theories.

Ibn Khaldun

  • Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406), the influential historian and philosopher born in Tunis, the capital city of Tunisia in North Africa, made early contributions to understanding the relationship between society and mental well-being. Often considered a founding figure in sociology, his work explored how social conditions shape human behavior and emotional health— insights that closely align with modern mental health frameworks.

  • In his seminal text, Muqaddimah (Introduction to History), Ibn Khaldun emphasized that economic security, social cohesion, and stable governance are essential to individual and collective well-being.

  • By advocating for critical analysis and evidence-based study of history, Ibn Khaldun introduced a scientific approach that examined how environments influence psychological outcomes. While he was not part of the later African diaspora, his ideas continue to inform understanding of African societies, Islamic culture, and the social roots of mental health.

  • Ibn Khaldun’s legacy endures in contemporary discussions of mental health, sociology, and psychology, reminding us that emotional well-being is deeply connected to the conditions in which people live, work, and relate to one another.

SUPPORTING YOUTH AND FAMILIES ON THE PATH TO HIGHER EDUCATION

The MAS-SSF Shifa for Youth Program hosted a 90-minute small group discussion on Thursday, February 5, centered on navigating societal norms within the U.S. school system. Presented in English with Pashto interpretation, the session brought together six older youth and three parents for an open, practical conversation focused on preparing for higher education.

Key discussion topics included:

  • Educating parents and students on appropriate communication and engagement with school administrative staff
  • Clarifying high school expectations for families unfamiliar with the U.S. education system
  • Strategies for making a smooth transition from high school to college or other post-secondary pathways
  • Understanding what to expect from a traditional college experience
  • Identifying where to begin — including completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a critical first step in determining eligibility for grants, scholarships, and loans

Facilitators also presented additional MAS-SSF programs and shared more information about the Shifa for Youth Program’s family-centered and youth services.

The session concluded with each family receiving a large pizza while and parents and eligible students were given $10 gift cards as a token of appreciation for their participation.

The Shifa for Youth team will continue offering practical, engaging workshops to support youth and families
