April is Autism Acceptance Month

Throughout April, members of the Montgomery Police Department will be wearing blue badges and placing magnets on their vehicles in honor of Autism Acceptance Month. The effort is designed to show support for residents with autism, foster community understanding, and promote inclusivity.

The badges coincide with the department’s Blue Envelope Program, designed to assist drivers with autism during traffic stops. Blue envelopes typically include a driver’s documents, a brief explanation that the individual may need accommodations, and guidance for officers on how to reduce stress and improve communication during the encounter. Residents are invited to pick up blue envelopes in the police department lobby at the Montgomery Municipal Center.

Free, No-Fuss Tax Counseling

Somerset County’s Volunteer Services and AARP are teaming up to help residents prepare their taxes. This free tax-counseling service is available to all county residents, but specifically for older adults, residents with disabilities, and lower-income residents who need help preparing federal and New Jersey income tax returns.

There are approximately 65 volunteers providing direct support to residents at six sites in Somerset County, including the Otto Kaufman Community Center. Call the Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services at (908) 541-5710 to book your appointment. Appointments will be made until the end of tax season or until all appointments are filled. Find more information, including appointment guidelines, here.

Register for Summer Recreation

Registration for summer recreation programs is now open! Explore the programs designed to create a fun-filled, memorable summer for residents of all ages. The Rec N Crew Summer Camp begins June 29. The six-week camp invites students entering first through sixth grade to enjoy outdoor, summer activities. Students entering seventh through ninth grade are invited to apply to the Rising Leaders program to assist with the Rec N Crew camp. Older students will receive specific training and rotate among groups to gain leadership experience and foster community engagement.

Be advised that the Montgomery Department of Parks and Recreation has switched to CommunityPass for online registration for summer programs. First time users will need to create a username and password then set up a family profile. Online registration requires payment by credit card, adding a convenience rate of 3% of the total transaction. Residents can bring exact cash or a check to the Otto Kaufman Community Center to avoid the convenience charge. Find more information on programs and registration here or contact Jessica Gonzalez at jgonzalez@montgomerynj.gov

Due to sewer main construction, the Montgomery Public Works Yard at 12 Harlingen Road will be temporarily closed to the public from April 20 to approximately July 20. During this time, the container facility and large containers for recycling materials will be closed. There will be no recycling blue bin pick-up. Find more information and possible alternatives for recycling or disposal on our website.
