As we close out 2020, we are reflecting on the courageous journeys survivors embarked on in the midst of this year's tremendous challenges and adversity. We hold up these moments of success, joy, and growth - they fuel the work we do every day at YWCA Glendale, and they demonstrate the power of what can be accomplished when staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners come together to support the most vulnerable members of our beloved community.

This year, our Housing Department worked tirelessly to support the many women and children displaced by domestic violence to find their way home - to spaces of their own, free from abuse. Through public and private partnerships, we were able to provide over $100,000 in emergency financial support to fund security deposits, rental assistance, car repairs, utility deposits, and other key payments needed to rebuild. We are honored to share the words of gratitude from a brave survivor who will be entering the new year securely housed and beginning to heal.
Dear YWCA Glendale,

Over the past several years, I have been a single parent going through a contentious divorce involving domestic violence against me and my children. My children and I even became homeless until my parents took us in. With the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine, life has gotten harder and much harder.

Sadly, my father passed away. Needless to say, we have struggled financially and continue to do so. Being disabled during a pandemic makes for less possibility to be hired. I've applied for jobs and though I am told that my disabilities won't prevent them hiring me, they cannot accommodate my work restrictions and so on...

So, I began to fall behind on everything... rent, bills, essentials, transportation, etc. Needing help, as everything has taken its toll and not knowing where to turn, I reached out to the YWCA. It was at the YWCA Glendale where I was provided my first walker many years ago. God is good and helped me remember that. I called your hotline and was connected to your Housing Department.

The most incredible things have happened since the very first call I received from the YWCA Housing Department! Your staff is warm, welcoming, understanding, caring, non-judgmental, concerned, professional and patient! Never have I come across such devotion to helping others. Your staff is accommodating to the person in need and their unique circumstances. I couldn't drive, so your staff came to meet me and helped me through the paperwork process. I was treated with respect. I was treated like a decent human being.

In November, the YWCA blessed my family with a full month's rent and partial rent for December 2020!!! We were also provided with gift cards and a bag of food!!! We cried, thanked her, cried again, air hugged and thanked again the lovely lady from YWCA who came to provide the Blessings!!

These BLESSINGS have helped our family stay housed, be fed and purchase needed supplies!!!

These BLESSINGS have given me the mindset to continue to search for work and put together a more marketable resume!

THANK YOU, YWCA Glendale Housing Department for giving my family a renewed spirit and a fighting chance during these unprecedented times!!!!

May God continue to Bless your organization, your staff, and your donors.
A special thank you to Magda Sellon, YWCA Glendale's Housing Supervisor (featured above) for her hard work to meet survivors where they are at during this pandemic, providing support, encouragement, and key resources.
