Leaders See the Impact of Summer Enrichment Scholarships

This summer, the Northern Middlesex YMCA welcomed Governor Ned Lamont, State Senator Matt Lesser and Middletown Mayor Gene Nocera to our Summer Enrichment Camp to see firsthand how community support is creating meaningful opportunities for local children and working families.

During their visit, the leaders spent time with campers, spoke with YMCA staff and learned more about the program’s impact. Summer Enrichment Camp provides children with a safe, welcoming place to learn, build friendships and stay engaged while school is out. Parents and caregivers rely upon dependable childcare they need to continue working.

Funding for camp scholarships helped make this experience accessible to families who may not otherwise have been able to afford it. This support is particularly important for ALICE families—households that are Asset Limited, Income Constrained and Employed.

These families earn above the federal poverty level but often struggle to cover basic expenses such as housing, food, transportation and childcare.

Through the YMCA’s Open Doors Financial Assistance Program, families with annual household incomes of $100,000 or less are eligible to apply for scholarships. Financial assistance helps ensure that the cost of childcare and other YMCA programs does not prevent families from receiving the support they need.

For working families, the cost of summer childcare can place significant pressure on an already-stretched household budget. A YMCA scholarship does more than help a child attend camp. It allows a parent to remain at work knowing their child is safe, supported and participating in enriching activities.

The leaders’ visit offered an opportunity to demonstrate how investments in youth programs create a direct and lasting impact in our community. Children gain confidence, friendships and new experiences, while their families gain the stability and peace of mind needed to work and thrive.

Supporting working families is also a current focus of the Northern Middlesex YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign. Donations help provide financial assistance for childcare and other essential YMCA programs.
