Lafayette Juniors Raises over $67,000 for Local Non-Profits and Issues Call for 2022-2023 Beneficiaries

The Lafayette Suburban Junior Women’s Club (“Lafayette Juniors”) raised $67,500 over the past 12 months for three local non-profit organizations. In an outdoor celebration, the Lafayette Juniors awarded $22,500 to each major beneficiary, Futures Explored, Lamorinda Village, and White Pony Express.

Lafayette Juniors traditionally organizes two fundraising events each year – a Rummage Sale in the fall and a Kitchen Tour in the spring. Due ongoing COVID-19 concerns, Lafayette Juniors paused the rummage sale and organized a successful holiday poinsettia sale, a raffle to celebrate local businesses, and other creative fundraising activities. In 2021, the traditional Kitchen Tour was re-born into The Outdoor Living Tour to keep the community safe but still raise funds for their beneficiaries. This year, Lafayette Juniors were fortunate to showcase a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, and the Outdoor Living Tour evolved to become the Lifestyle Tour.

Lafayette Juniors looks forward to continuing the tradition of giving to well-deserving local organizations, and is now accepting applications until July 31st, 2022 from all non-profit organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area that are dedicated to social welfare, education and/or civic work. Lafayette Juniors will select organizations from the applicant pool in August to become their beneficiaries for the 2022 - 2023 membership year. To obtain an application or learn more about Lafayette Juniors, please visit the Lafayette Juniors website at https://lafayettejuniors.org.

Epic Road Trip
Epic Road Trip

Join Girl Scouts of Northern California as we honor the extraordinary contributions of Marina Park, GSNorCal’s CEO of 15 years and Michelle McCormick, Chief Mission Delivery Officer whose lifetime Girl Scout career has spanned 42 years.

This fall Marina and Michelle will be hitting the road and making stops along our 19-county footprint to thank volunteers, donors, staff, and the community and to gather stories, hopes, and wishes for the incoming CEO.

Within those 19 counties, we know there are current and future members who could benefit greatly from the leadership experiences that Girl Scouts offers. As a way to truly honor Marina and Michelle’s dedication to building girls of courage, confidence, and character, we are asking corporate supporters to make a leadership gift to the Opportunity Fund and inspire our Girl Scout community to raise $50,000.

Each year, GSNorCal serves over 10,000 girl members who live in low-income communities. Your gift of $500, $1,000, $2,500, or $5,000 to the Opportunity Fund will ensure girls from low-income communities have equitable access to Girl Scouts, and the incredible sisterhood, supportive adults, and special experiences that foster belonging and connection that are the core of our world-renowned leadership program.

Corporate supporters will have their name and/or logo listed on our road trip webpage, invite postcard, and the signage at each stop. You will also be invited to one of our donor appreciation lunches.

Please respond no later than August 15th to be included in the invite and poster to KCowan@gsnorcal.org.

The Morning Bell Project: Community Fundraiser Around Anti-Gun Violence In Schools

The Morning Bell Project is a grassroots effort started by local moms to raise awareness around and show support for organizations working to stop gun violence in schools. It seeks to create a large-scale community quilt, sewn by dedicated and generous volunteers, in the spirit of the powerful AIDS Quilt. The quilt will be made of squares, designed by parents, kids, teachers, and other community members, that depict their commitment to schools free from gun violence.

The project grew out of the Uvalde tragedy. It is an effort to maintain awareness of the need for even stronger gun protections that keep our children, teachers, and school staff safe in an environment that should be solely focused on learning, growing, and having fun. The project name is evocative of a school bell, a new day, a call to action, and in its use of the word “morning,” reminds us of “mourning” in the wake of Uvalde. A quilt felt appropriate, as it symbolizes unity, protection, and safety.

Our hope is to display the quilt at a public event. Each square costs $25, which will be split between a donation to anti-gun advocacy groups that focus on schools and kids and costs associated with materials and project administration. Please visit our website sponsored and built by our amazing partner Quiltlove - https://givequiltlove.com/the-morning-bell-project - for more project details, updates, and to submit your square! We are so grateful for this community and appreciate you sharing the project with your networks!
Easier than ever to make a difference. Cook & Serve dinner for Mountain View Emergency Family Shelter

SHELTER, Inc. received a generous grant to pay for food and supplies at its Martinez Shelter, and provides everything you need to cook and serve a meal! When you sign up, you can choose the meal you’d like to prepare, and the supplies will be waiting. By preparing a meal, you're providing a family dining experience while ensuring no one goes hungry.

Capacity: Due to current Health Department restrictions, a maximum of four volunteers, over the age of 13, are allowed to prepare and serve meals.

Time: Dinner is served at 6:00 pm. Volunteers can arrive as early as 4:00 pm to begin meal preparation. Volunteers will be screened upon entry for exposure to COVID-19 and temperatures will be taken and logged.

Family Quantity/Ages: 11 adults, 4 school age children and 3 younger kids.

Preparing Dinner:  Food may not be prepared offsite in home/unlicensed kitchens and brought to the shelter to serve. This violates Health Department food handling codes, and is why we have a commercially licensed kitchen. Food handling and CDC guidelines must be strictly followed.
  • Wash hands before serving and preparation of food.
  • Use mask and gloves when handling food at all times.
  • Wear a hair restraint when working in food serving/preparation area.
  • When you taste food, do not put the utensil back into the food.
  • Cover food and utensils when not in use.

Social Distancing: Unfortunately, volunteers may not sit with families and partake in the meal at this time.

Clean-Up: Please clean-up after meal--dishes and/or disposing of trash. Store and label any left-over food which is used for lunch the following day.

Have you heard about the new White Pony Express Food Rescue App?

The new White Pony Express (WPE) app connects restaurants with excess food to food-insecure community members. Download the WPE app and claim a run to drive surplus food from a retailer to a local agency that serves the community. If you have a spare hour, most food rescues take less than that to complete – a small way to make a HUGE positive impact! Become a volunteer today! Download the Food Rescue app by searching “White Pony Express” and learn more by visiting whiteponyexpress.org/food-rescue-direct.

You can also help by asking your favorite restaurants if they’d like to donate their surplus food to White Pony Express. Let us know if you have a lead by emailing WPE’s Food Sourcing Manager at peterolsen@whiteponyexpress.org.
