Trick or Treat Street TODAY in Downtown Lafayette

For a fun, safe Halloween event, children and their parents are invited to Trick-or-Treat on Mt. Diablo Blvd. from Plaza Way (Lafayette Plaza Park) to Dewing Ave, Lafayette Circle and in La Fiesta Square from 4:00-6:00pm on Friday, October 28, 2022. This event is FREE for everyone and recommended for children 9 and under. Come in costume! Don’t forget to bring your Trick-or-Treat bag.

Mixpo 2022 is hosted by your 5 local Chambers – Lafayette Chamber, Walnut Creek Chamber, Pleasant Hill Chamber, Concord Chamber and the Martinez Chamber. 

Mixpo 2022 combines the best of a mixer, and a business expo. Chamber members are encouraged to attend as a guest to mix or attend as an exhibitor and host a booth space for a fee. Only one space is yet available through the Lafayette Chamber. If you would like to participate as a vendor, please let us know as soon as possible before we are sold out.

Community Thanksgiving Breakfast 

Thursday, November 17, 7am-8:30am, Lafayette Veterans Memorial Center

We invite everyone! Politicos, non-profits, school representatives, business leaders, community leaders, Rotarians, our Chamber members, etc. to all come together to share in a breakfast and enjoy our special speaker, Chris Helfrich.

Chris is a social entrepreneur and nonprofit leader committed to finding innovative solutions to community-based issues and problems. Currently, Chris is President and CEO of Stephen and Ayesha Curry's Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, which he helped launch in July 2019.  
 
Doors open at 7am with coffee, 7:15am buffet, 7:30am program, ends by 8:30am. A traditional egg breakfast will be provided by Sunrise Bistro Catering. Breakfast buffet includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, fruit, and pastries. Gluten free option includes organic plain low-fat yogurt, berry compote, and sunrise granola. Coffee and tea will be served along with orange juice.

Walk to End Alzheimer's - East Bay is TOMORROW!

5th Annual MCC Turkey Trot Fun Run

30th annual Walnut Creek Turkey Trot

Join Forma Gym this Thanksgiving Morning in Downtown Walnut Creek for our 30th annual Walnut Creek Turkey Trot! Concord Turkey Trot is November 24, 2022! This 5K Run/Walk benefits Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa.  All Lafayette Reservoir Run participants can get a $5 discount on this event by entering code word ‘Lafayette’ at checkout.

Hospice East Bay Tree of Lights

Hospice East Bay is proud to be celebrating our 36th annual Tree of Lights! For 36 years these ceremonies have provided a way for families and friends to honor their loved ones and find solace in the symbolism of light as the names of their loved ones are read. The funds raised by these ceremonies make it possible for us to provide hospice care to patients who are not covered by insurance.
 
The ceremony for Lafayette will be held on Tuesday, November 15, at 5:30pm.

Cantare, an Oakland-based non-profit community choral organization, presents its annual December Holiday Concert, featuring the Chorale, Chamber Ensemble, Nova, and Youth Honor Choir, accompanied by full orchestra and organ. David Morales and Julie Haydon, Directors.
 
The concert ushers in the joy of the season, and the hope of a new world order marked by unity, equity, social justice and everlasting peace. There will be works by Bach, Sweelinck, Howells, and Lauridsen, along with arrangements by Robert Shaw, Bradford, Sjolund, Gary Fry and others. The audience will be invited to join in singing carols and other holiday favorites.
 
Singers in the Honor Youth Choir come from Cantare’s children’s and youth programs, in which over 3,000 Oakland youth participate in weekly classroom music education and after-school choirs, and a yearly summer camp, 100% tuition free

Rotary Club of Lamorinda Sunrise

Rotary Club of Lamorinda Sunrise continues to raise funds for the White Pony Express Van Project. Purchase your tickets for their hand-made flower cart at the It's a Wonderful Life in Lafayette event on Sunday, December 4.

Holiday Drives
MVPC

Canned food drive: MVPC is helping support our Mission Partner the Bay Area Rescue Mission by holding a food drive this November.

They are requesting some items for their Thanksgiving baskets they will distribute to the community. Cans of String Beans, cans of corn, cranberry sauce, instant potatoes, rice an beans are highly desired items for the baskets. They are grateful for any canned food donations, pasta, peanut butter, etc. 

We will have donation locations at the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, Bank of the West, and Loards ice cream in Moraga.

Thank you for helping support our neighbors in Richmond by helping them this Thanksgiving. 
MVPC scoops bags of rice and beans to donate to our Mission Partner in Oakland, Harbor House to use in their food distribution program. On November 6th we will be scooping rice and beans after our Sunday 9:30am services to bless our local Mission Partner.
For over 10 years, our MVPC community has provided a Thanksgiving feast shared by our middle school students and Harbor House families in Oakland. This year, 6th thru 8th graders are invited to share and serve dinner on Thursday, November 17. The traditional Thanksgiving dinner will be provided by Town Bakery & Cafe and desserts will be homemade by MVPC families. To find out how to donate a dinner item, or to donate to the dinner fund, or to sign up your student or yourself as an adult volunteer, visit Middle School Harbor House Thanksgiving.
Help us support our local Mission Partner, Harbor House Ministries, in Oakland this Christmas. Harbor House uses donated gifts in their Christmas Store which allows parents to buy presents for their children at a greatly reduced price. To help, provide new, unwrapped toys and gifts such as balls, games, dolls, books, art sets, etc. for babies, kids, & teens. Please drop these gifts to the MVPC Church Office by December 5th.

Our Church opens a food pantry weekly Wednesday nights at our Church. If you would like to donated to this Moraga based food pantry, please drop donations to the Church office at 10 Moraga Valley Lane, Moraga. Nuts, granola bars, coffee, peanut butter, paper goods are popular items.

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Help over 300 low-income families celebrate! White Pony Express is launching their 3rd annual Star Program with the help of local businesses. This unique holiday program uplifts lives throughout the county during a season where warmth is meant to be shared! National Prescription Drug TAKE BACK 

On Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Needles and sharps cannot be accepted; only pills, patches, and liquids sealed in their original container will be accepted. Vape pens or other e-cigarette devices from individual consumers are accepted only after the batteries are removed from the devices.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Bring your pills for disposal to the following sites:

A Brighter Day's 3rd Annual Virtual Gala

Veterans Day Vigil

Monday, November 11, 2022 at 4:30PM at the Lafayette Hillside Memorial
 
The memorial is across from BART in Lafayette. Thoughts will be focused on U.S. soldiers who have served on behalf of our country and the sacrifices they’ve made. It will include short speeches, music and reflection.
 
Lafayette Hillside Memorial continues to be a place of reflection and remembrance; a protest against forgetting. It is a place to recognize, honor, and commemorate individual national service contributions. The memorial is also a place that encourages individual and public reflection on those contributions, and the otherwise unintended, unseen, and unexamined costs of war.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Be Part of the Solution!

Can you spare 2-4 hours every week or two to help Lamorinda older adults age 60+ get to a medical or personal appointment, the grocery store, or to run an errand? The Lamorinda Spirit needs volunteer drivers. Please email Riki at [email protected] or call 925-284-5546 to learn how you can help.
 
If you know older Lamorinda residents age 60+ or people with disabilities who need transportation to destinations in Lamorinda, Concord, Martinez, Pleasant Hill, and Walnut Creek, please suggest they email [email protected] or call 925-283-3534. We love to help older adults get out and about; and we love to say, “YES” to ride requests! 
 
Paid Positions: If have a good driving record and enjoy talking to people, you may find a good fit as the paid ($21 an hour) Lafayette Downtown Shuttle Driver, driving a downtown loop for four hours on 1-3 days a week. We are also in search of a second Dispatcher to take ride reservations 1-2 afternoons a week, communicate with passengers and drivers, and determine the route. This position pays $21 an hour and requires moderate knowledge of Excel, map programs, and email. For more hours, these positions can be combined. After-School Program Volunteers Needed: We are looking for volunteers to provide academic and mentoring support for the children in our Pittsburg and Concord after-school programs. We ask volunteers to commit to one afternoon per week (Monday-Thursday) through the end of the semester at one of our four sites: Pleasant Hill, Concord, Pittsburg, or Bay Point

Volunteers Needed to Support Local Children in Foster Care
 
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Contra Costa County is a nonprofit organization that recruits, trains, and supports volunteer advocates as a powerful voice for the best interest of abused and neglected children living in foster care during the court process, in order to help every child ultimately thrive in a safe, stable, and permanent home.

As we celebrate our 41st year of serving the children and youth in our community, we are excited to share the launch of our new CASA Tutor Program.

CASA Tutors will provide consistent educational support to children in grades TK-12 who are already working with one of our CASA Volunteer Advocates. They will assist with homework and learning concepts in a supportive, trauma informed environment and help students reach their educational goals, build their confidence, and feel supported as they navigate through their school years.

Trust in Education (TIE)
 
Trust in Education is a nonprofit based in Lafayette since 2003. TIE helps Afghan families rebuild their lives with programs that have helped farmers plant fruit trees, build schools and bridges, translated over 1000 Khan Academy educational videos into the local language for TIE's computer libraries in Kabul, and much more. With a focus on education and educating Afghan Girls, TIE has an ongoing Student Sponsorship Program. TIE is directly supporting Families with our new Family Sponsorship Program, Cost: $1,200 per year or $600 for 1/2 a year for a shared sponsorship. $100.00 per month paid to the family each month with NO fees applied to administration costs.

In case you did not already know, the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Building is home to the largest variety of events in Contra Costa County! From Weddings, Mitzvah’s, business meetings, to Celebrations of Life, the Veterans Building hosts those type of events and more.

Assistance League Announces Scholarships Applications for 2023-24

Helping students achieve their educational goals.
 
Since 1999, Assistance League® of Diablo Valley’s Scholarships Program, has provided financial and emotional support to Contra Costa residents who are high school, community college and university students as well as returnees to the academic community. In 2022, $206,000 was awarded to 53 honorees, each of whom expressed a desire to advance through education by maintaining a designated grade point average, volunteering in campus and community projects and charting an academic timeline.
 
Student Scholarships for 2023-24 are now available for graduating high school seniors applying to four-year colleges/universities, community college students transferring with junior-level status to four-year colleges/ universities, and to current and former foster youth applying to four-year colleges/universities, community colleges, or vocational training programs. A Return to School Scholarship is also available.
