Assistance League Thrift Shop’s Fangtastic Hallo-o-o-o-ween Lurks

The “dead-icated” member volunteers at Assistance League® of Diablo Valley Thrift Shop at the Way Side Inn, at 3521 Golden Gate Way, Lafayette, again warn that this year’s Fangtastic Hallo-o-o-o-ween event will take your breath away, literally! Get “a head of the crowd” on Tuesday, October 4, 10 a.m. sharp (ouch). Rumor has it that one timid soul did not heed this advice; she simply did not have her heart in it.

As in previous encounters, lurking witches, spiders, bone-chilling skeletons and decorative “goreds” will carve out that crypt-like ambience so in keeping with the event. Those with a sweet tooth, make the most of it by claiming a candy carrier to see you through to the early morning hours.

As always, thank you for giving an arm and a leg by donating to and shopping at Assistance League of Diablo Valley’s primary fundraiser. Do drop by; the lurking member volunteers will “keep an eye out for you.” To learn more, please visit: assistanceleague.org/diablo-valley.

Jeff Heyman
Jeff Heyman’s Black and White Photography to be Featured in “Triptychs,” an Exhibit
at Lafayette’s Town Hall Theatre Gallery

The City of Lafayette’s Public Art Committee has selected “Triptychs,” a collection of 36 black and white photographs by the East Bay photographer Jeff Heyman, for exhibit at the Town Hall Theatre Gallery in Lafayette.

The exhibition runs October 4 through November 17. There will be an opening reception Sunday, October 9, from 3-5:00 p.m. The Town Hall Theatre Gallery is located at 3535 School Street in Lafayette, Calif.

First taking photography classes at San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, Calif., Heyman went on to earn a degree from San Francisco State University in Fine Art Photography. He studied under such photographers as Catherine Wagner, Don Worth, Jack Welpott and Melanie Walker, and painters Robert Bechtle and Paul Pratchenko.

Heyman has had work featured in group shows and won several awards for his photos. This is his first solo exhibit. The photographs range from abstracts of a home in Orinda to surreal objects and bizarre portraits. The photos can be viewed online here.

Heyman chose the triptych format, which historically has been used to convey a spiritual meaning or a narrative, because he felt it suited these particular photographs.

“I have always liked triptychs and felt that although I’m not telling a particular story with these photographs, it lends them a certain amount of whimsical mystery,” Heyman said. “Each triptych will mean something different to the person viewing it. It will become their own personal narrative.”

Especially for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

For every Breast Cancer Support quilt purchased this October, Quiltlove will donate 10% of proceeds to Fighting Pretty. Fighting Pretty's mission is to remind women going through cancer that they are strong, beautiful, fierce and amazing. It's a great nonprofit that I've really come to respect (it also scores a 90/100 on Charity Navigator).

Quiltlove is also donating a quilt to the Making Strides, Bay Area, CA walk to support fundraising efforts and will be at the Crissy Field event on 10/16.

Quiltlove quilts are a heartwarming, personal way for groups to wrap loved ones going through breast cancer in their support, particularly when they are isolating due to chemotherapy treatment and missing social connection. Learn more at giveguiltlove.com.
Great ShakeOut Drill

If you are a HAM or GMRS licensed radio operator, you are invited to participate in the Lamorinda Great ShakeOut drill being conducted on October 20th at 10:20am. The drill is being conducted by Lamorinda Community Emergency Response Team, Moraga-Orinda Fire District, Town of Moraga, City of Orinda, and Lamorinda Area Radio Interest Group to test emergency communications. Specifically being tested is communication equipment, the Zonehaven system, and the CERT texting call out procedure. This will also be a great opportunity to practice radio skills.

An Emergency Operations Center will be set up in Moraga where a net control will be located. At 10:20am, after receiving notification of the exercise drill, Lamorinda residents are encouraged to call in to a GMRS repeater: Moraga channel 121 (20R and CTCSS 77Hz), Orinda channel 122 (21R and CTCSS 77Hz) and Lafayette channel 123 (22R and CTCSS 77Hz) and give their first name, street and city. This information will then be mapped to show which areas have good radio coverage.

For those who can’t participate in the radio net, the ShakeOut is a good opportunity to go over earthquake procedures with your family and to check emergency supplies to make sure you have enough food and water stored as well as a “go bag” in case of evacuation.
Lamorinda CERT has some water drums available for delivery and if interested please go to: https://supplies.lamorindaCERT.org

OLLI
Author Talk: The Personal is Political with Isidra Mencos

When a country is sick, the population shows the symptoms. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UC Berkeley invites you to join them on Wednesday, October 26, 10:30-11:30 AM, at the Lafayette Library as author Isidra Mencos examines the intersection between politics and private lives at a pivotal time in the history of Spain. Mencos grew up under the Franco dictatorship. She was 17 when Franco died in 1975. The transition to democracy took some years, but the cultural and sexual revolution happened fast. It was a time of hope, but also of political and social conflict. With democracy under threat around the world, Mencos reflects on the impact that authoritarianism has in every aspect of a person’s life, and the decades-long shadow it casts.

Originally from Spain, Mencos has lived in the US since 1992. She holds a PhD in Spanish and Latin American Contemporary Literature from the University of California, Berkeley, where she taught for twelve years. After a 10-year stint in the corporate world, she quit her job in 2016 to focus on writing. Her essays have been widely published in literary journals and general interest magazines, such as Chicago Quarterly Review, Front Porch Journal, The Huffington Post, Wisdom Well, and WIRED. Her piece "My Books and I" was listed as Notable in the Best American Essays Anthology. Her debut memoir Promenade of Desire — A Barcelona Memoir comes out in October 2022. (She Writes Press).
This talk is free and open to all. Proof of vaccination with photo ID required. Masks strongly encouraged.

OLLI @Berkeley is a dynamic learning community with courses, speaker events, intergenerational dialogues, meetups, UC research opportunities & more for learners 50+. Learn about membership at https://olli.berkeley.edu/.

A SHELTER, Inc. Success Story -  Meet Tiffany
Tiffany came to SHELTER, Inc. in April of 2022 with her partner, and their two children, 11 and 12-years-old. They had become homeless and lost their housing and car during the school year due to low wages and rising costs. There was no family or support network they could turn to, and they had been living in shelters or paying for motels for six months. Struggling to get by, and make sure her children went to school on public transportation, she knew she needed help, and didn’t know where to turn. With the assistance of SHELTER, Inc., she was able to move her family into a new unit in July of 2022. With the stress of homelessness lifted, and continuing guidance from her case manager, she was able to start a new job, and save enough to buy a vehicle. She is determined to maintain a stable, secure life for her family, happy to have a place they can call home, and grateful for SHELTER Inc.’s assistance.
TRINITY CENTER RECEIVES LOVE FROM LAFAYETTE

September brings subtle and not so subtle shifts in our weather, in our routines, in our mindsets, and in our priorities. At Lafayette’s St Anselm’s Episcopal Church, September, for many years, has been the month that they observe the turning of the leaves while they turn their energies toward planning their annual Harvest Festival for the benefit of Trinity Center. The leaders and congregation of St Anselm’s have adopted Trinity Center and have made the mission and vision of Trinity Center their own.

Harvest Festival shifted during Covid from a true festival filled with fun, food, and friends who gathered to raise support for Trinity Center, to a virtual fundraising and awareness campaign.  This year, you are invited to join in as we add the fun back in to our fundraising campaign. Stay tuned for details! See more about Harvest Festival here.

Trinity Center is grateful for the many ways we have received compassionate support from Lafayette. Homelessness is a devastation that impacts all of us. Trinity Center is determined to keep doorways to opportunity open for our unsheltered neighbors who seek housing, employment, increased income, education, wellness, and community connection.

We need your help and we have opportunities for you!  Volunteer, Donate, and/or Plan an event!
