Hello {First Name}, it’s been some time since our last update. Like many organizations, we’ve been navigating ongoing shifts in US federal policy throughout the year, monitoring developments to understand their impact on our clients and on your sustainability goals.

Despite uncertainties, one thing remains clear: our client community advances sustainability not just in response to regulations, but out of genuine commitment. The dedication shown in improving your products, serving customers, and protecting our shared environment is a true investment—and we deeply appreciate your efforts. Supporting your continued growth in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is central to our mission.

In this edition, explore our newly discounted On-Demand training opportunities, expert guidance for scaling LCA across your organization, insights from an ongoing DOE project, and an invitation to connect with us at the ACLCA Conference in Atlanta this September. We look forward to moving sustainability forward together.

DOE Project- Decarbonization of the Steel Industry

The steel industry's transition to low-carbon solutions is slow due to high energy needs and technology barriers. Recently, more sustainable energy sources—like densified biogenic fuels such as biochar—are being considered for Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking. A DOE-funded study involving Long Trail Sustainability and the University of Minnesota NRRI is assessing the environmental impact of replacing fossil coal with biochar, focusing on Red Pine wood and Dry Oat Hulls as promising sources.

The project is comparing these bio-based alternatives to fossil coal, analyzing their environmental profiles and their performance in steelmaking trials. The functional unit is one metric ton of steel, with the study also evaluating the role of logistics, scaling from lab to market production, and economic costs. The findings will help determine whether densified biochar can reduce emissions and improve sustainability in steel manufacturing.

Join LTS at ACLCA 2025!

Find us at ACLCA 2025 in Atlanta Georgia! We'll be there on September 15th, leading a pre-conference workshop on SimaPro Synergy, teaching LCA 101, and presenting our DOE project, Decarbonization of the Steel Industry: Fueling the future with Biochar for greener steel.

Reach out if you'd like to set up a time to meet face-to-face to discuss a project.

We hope to see you there!
