When Mary moved to Victory Centre of River Oaks to be more active, the thought of camping never crossed her mind. Yet, this August, Mary, at age 79, embarked on her very first overnight camp trip with Camp VIVA!

“My motto is that you’re never too old to try something new,” said Mary’s daughter Sharon , who joined her mom. “We fished, rode a paddle-boat and tie-dyed t-shirts.” Sharon added that being older and having a disability should not hold anyone back, as Mary, who is paralyzed on one side, kept up with all the fun.
“Mom had a really great time.”

What’s more, Sharon’s fiancé Rainne flew from California to surprise Mary. An experienced fisherman, Rainne baited the worms and took the fish off the line for Mary, who reeled in three big ones.
Also joining Mary on the annual Camp VIVA! adventure were residents from Pathway to Living Supportive Living communities throughout Chicago and the suburbs. Camp VIVA! gives older adults of all abilities a healthy break from the routine and a chance to enjoy the great outdoors.

Why the Secret to Aging May Well Be FRIENDSHIP

Quick! Who do you think is more likely to be happy and healthy at the age of 90, all things being equal? A woman who moves several states away to live near her children and grandchildren? Or a woman who remains in the same town where she’s lived for decades, only seeing her children and their families on holidays?

The answer may surprise you.
