Chen claims inaugural Distinguished Faculty Award in DEI
“Receiving the inaugural John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Distinguished Faculty Award in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is a tremendous, unexpected honor that affirms the work I (and countless others) have done within the realm of DEI in medicine, and signals to our trainees and colleagues that diversity and inclusion is important and valued here at McGovern Medical School,” Chen said. “I am deeply grateful, humbled, and encouraged.”

Endowments Awarded to Robinson and McNutt
Two faculty members at McGovern Medical School, Department of Surgery have been granted prestigious endowments.
Dr. Robinson is on the TMC OR Executive Committee and is the Co-chair of Memorial Hermann Surgery Clinical Practice Committee and the Memorial Hermann Integrated Cancer Network. She also serves as Vice Chair of Quality for the Department of Surgery.
Dr. McNutt is the Trauma Medical Director for the Red Duke Trauma Institute and the Medical Director for the Trauma Service Line for the Memorial Hermann Hospital System.
Being appointed to an endowed position is one of the greatest honors UTHealth can bestow on a faculty member. Congratulations to Drs. Robinson and McNutt.

Khan Military Scholarships
The first Khan Military Scholarships were awarded in March, 2022. This scholarship fund was started by Shane Jensen, MD, a former acute care surgery fellow, in honor of Saleem Khan, MD, Professor and Chief of Emergency General Surgery at McGovern Medical School. Dr. Khan has had a distinguished military career, having been deployed seven times between 2003 and 2009 to Iraq and Afghanistan. He has served in Operation Desert Storm. He is a decorated veteran who has been awarded the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. He currently serves our community by providing high quality emergency general surgical care and by training the next generation of surgical and healthcare providers. The intent of the scholarship is to honor and support military trainees pursuing a career in surgery. The fund is made possible by ongoing contributions by faculty and military trainees. The scholarship is given twice yearly. This year’s scholarship awardees will receive $1500 each to support their pursuit of a surgical career:

Ryan Yang, MD – General Surgery Resident

Scott Represents at National Committee on Trauma Annual Meeting
|
Michael “Collins” Scott, MD, presented at the ACS - Committee on Trauma 100th Anniversary Meeting in Seattle, WA for the Resident Paper Competition in the Basic Science Division. He was the winner of the Region VI competition.
His presentation was titled: “The effect of dexmedetomidine on microglia cytokine expression and metabolic enzyme activity.” Coauthors include Scott D. Olson, PhD; Charles S. Cox, Jr., MD.
The paper discussed one of their in vitro studies of microglia, an important immune cell in neuroinflammation. After treating with different inflammatory stimuli, Scott and his team observed changes in the expression of inflammatory cytokines and glycolytic enzyme activity in microglia to better characterize their inflammatory profile. They also studied how dexmedetomidine, a commonly used critical care sedative, affected the inflammatory profile of microglia.
