DID YOU KNOW that researchers publishing in Frontiers in Nutrition examined the the association between vitamin C intake and cognitive function in older US adults? While vitamin C has many attributes, cognitive function had never been studied until now.

Participants with the highest vitamin C intake showed significantly better performance on the Auditory Fluency Test and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test compared to those with the lowest intake (500 mg versus 120 mg.).

For the first time, vitamin C exhibited cognitive benefits for older adults.

Steve: It is very difficult to report on a study such as this, but it is imperative that I do so in the event that you take action or simply do more.

A new study in JAMA Network Open reported on how has US children’s health - mortality, chronic conditions, obesity, functional status, and symptoms - changed from 2007 to 2023. Unfortunately, US children’s health has deteriorated across a broad spectrum of indicators. Here are some of the unbearable findings.

• U.S. children and teens were 78%-80% more likely to die than peers in 18 other wealthy nations from 2007-2022.
• The largest excess deaths were from premature birth, sudden infant death, firearms, motor vehicle crashes, and substance use.
• Nearly half of American kids now have a chronic health condition.
• Childhood obesity, anxiety, depression, and early puberty have all risen dramatically.

The lead author of the study concluded with a call to action: "We are experiencing a crisis in child health. This is clear and really not debatable."

As parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, friends, caregivers, educators, health professionals, coworkers, and young people old enough to hold themselves accountable, it is incumbent upon us to do better helping our youth.

A 66 year-old male came to see Steve about prostate health, tiredness (afternoon swoon), hip soreness, elevated cholesterol, weight, and high work stress.

He was already on cholesterol medication and two blood pressure medications. His diet resembled the standard American diet. He drank water, tonic water and an occasional soda. He did not take any supplements.

His blood work exhibited very high levels of sedimentation rate (chronic inflammation), uric acid (inflammation and gout), prostate-specific antigen, cortisol (stress hormone), iron, among others, as well as low vitamin D.

Under Steve's direction, he completely changed his diet and lifestyle, and started taking targeted supplements. His wife was extremely supportive and was integral in the process.

After six months, there was remarkable change. Aside from losing 15 pounds and having no afternoon swoon, his sedimentation rate went from 33 to 6! This means he went from having extreme chronic inflammation to virtually none.

All other levels improved except the uric acid. Steve suggested he ask his physician to take a short holiday from one of his blood pressure medications, which can keep uric acid levels high. After removing the medication, his uric acid dropped without elevating his blood pressure. Finally, he was able to reduce his statin medication by half with the intention of eventually eliminating it.

He was thrilled, his wife was thrilled, and his PCP was thrilled. This is another example of a client who put in exemplary work to change his ways and is reaping the benefits.

A pregnant woman came to me as her baby was breech. She underwent an external version procedure, where pressure is applied on the mother’s belly with the attempt to turn the baby. The baby would move and then pop right back to the breech position. 

It was recommended that she receive the Webster Technique. This is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nervous system. It balances out the pelvic muscles and ligaments. This in turn removes constraint to the mother’s uterus to allow the baby to get in the best possible position for birth. 

I used the Webster technique on her and explained that in the past I have had mother’s feel the baby turn and or kick differently. That it could take up to 6 visits to accomplish this change. She noticed the baby was very active during the adjustment and in the evenings after seeing me. I explained that if baby didn’t turn, the umbilical cord could be around the neck and that baby would not be able to turn, nor should it. 

That’s exactly what happened with her. She had four sessions and even though baby was kicking and moving a lot he never turned. She had hoped for natural childbirth like her first two pregnancies, but ended up having a c-section. Indeed the cord kept him in the breech position as the body’s innate intelligence knew to keep baby upright.
