Increased Sustainability Funding

Thanks to the passion and dedication of our community, sustainability has remained a high priority in Mountain View. At its June 11 meeting, the City Council approved $7.5 million (!) for the Sustainability Program for the next three years. This includes funding for a new on-going Analyst position, implementation of the next Environmental Sustainability Action Plan, and numerous community engagement activities.
With this increased funding, the Sustainability Program will create new programs and policies and implement actions that will help us decrease our greenhouse gas emissions, meet our climate goals more broadly, and make Mountain View a more enjoyable and safe place for everyone.

Clean Car and Clipper Card Incentives
|
|
Trade in your old car and get up to $9,500 for a clean vehicle, or up to $4,500 on a Clipper Card (all-in-one transit pass) if you qualify as a low-income household, live in an eligible area, and own a 1996 or older vehicle. Find out more information and if you qualify

At its June 11 meeting, the City Council reviewed an action-oriented Draft Zero Waste Plan 2019 that contains 38 initiatives through 2030. Ranging from short- to long-term, the actions include Food Ware Packaging Reduction, Multi-Family Food Scraps Collection, State Packaging and Product Advocacy, and Technical Assistance to Schools.

Taken all together, these actions are estimated to divert 28,200 tons of material from the landfill and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40,380 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2
e), about six percent of our total emissions. Adjusting for population growth as estimated by the City’s General Plan, this would put the City near its Zero Waste 90 percent diversion goal.
Based on the Council and public input received at the June 11 meeting, staff will prepare a final plan for approval in the fall. At that time, the City Council will also provide direction on options for new collection, processing, and landfill disposal agreements, all of which expire at the end of 2021. Got empty one pound propane cylinders? Bring them to the SMaRT Station for recycling! A pilot program for the collection of EMPTY one pound propane cylinders (no BBQ sized tanks or MAPP gas) is now in place at the SMaRT Station at 301 Carl Road in Sunnyvale.
Mountain View residents can drop-off up to three cylinders per trip, during normal drop-off hours of 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Propane cylinders should never be thrown in the trash, because they can explode and injure workers. Learn more about the pilot program and other drop-off options

Action of the Month: Green Monday
|

Reducing the amount of meat and dairy products we eat is one of the most beneficial actions we can take for the planet. Meat and dairy account for 60 percent of emissions from agriculture, but just 18 percent of calories and 37 percent of protein levels. Start your week off with Green Monday and opt for a plant-based diet one day a week.
