Give The Gift of Great Memories

This holiday season, give the gift of great memories! Physical items may end up in the landfill, but memories last a lifetime. Think outside of the box – literally – and gift your friend or loved one an experience. Pottery or cooking classes, music lessons, concert tickets, class packs at a local gym or studio – there is a gift experience for everyone on your list!

If you do give a physical gift, remember that wrapping paper is not recyclable or compostable. Opt for gift bags and fabric ribbons that can be used year after year, or use unlined Kraft paper and twine for natural wrapping that can be composted.

Redwood Bikeshare - Now Rolling in Marin

You may have noticed bikes popping up around the SMART corridor. Redwood Bikeshare is the fun new way to get around Marin and Sonoma counties!

The Sonoma County Transportation Authority (SCTA) and Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM) have partnered with Drop Mobility for a pilot bikeshare program along the SMART corridor. Whether you’re running errands, visiting town, or riding recreationally, you can now cruise Marin and Sonoma counties with Redwood Bikeshare!

The bikeshare system is being installed as permits are finalized and equipment is delivered. The overall system includes a fleet of 300 e-bikes across approximately 60 hubs in the two counties.

Check out the Redwood Bikeshare webpage for details and download the app!

Going All Electric at Home

Did you know that around 1/3 of all greenhouse gas pollution generated in Marin comes from burning gas in our homes and businesses for water heating, cooking, drying clothes, and space heating?

If you’ve been thinking about electrifying your home to make it more energy efficient, check out the new Electrify Marin Information Hub! The curated pages at the hub provide a wealth of valuable information for residents looking to transition their homes from gas-fueled appliances to energy efficient, electric alternatives.

Make This Holiday Season Greener: Remember to Compost Your Food Scraps!

As we enter the holiday season, we’d like to remind you to put all food scraps in the compost bin and green cart. Not only is it the best thing to do for our environment – it’s the law. You may need to educate out-of-town guests on the proper disposal of food waste at your holiday celebrations.

Regardless of their condition, all food scraps belong in the compost. If food scraps go to the landfill, they create methane, a powerful heat-trapping greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. By composting our food scraps, we can return nutrients to the soil and avoid methane emissions from landfills.

Whether it’s raw (such as banana peels and carrot tops), cooked (such as plate scrapings, meat, and bones), or rotten (such as expired leftovers and takeout) — it all belongs in the green cart.

Marin Sustainability Tracker

Are you familiar with the Marin Sustainability Tracker? This tool from the Marin Climate and Energy Partnership (MCEP) is an interactive map that shows how each jurisdiction is doing in terms of sustainable development. It covers categories such as energy, transportation, green house gas emissions, waste, and water.

Sustainability Tip of the Month

This Holiday Season Remember: Tis a Gift To Be Simple

Think outside the package this holiday season by simplifying your gift giving and your celebrations.

Help a little one in your life pick a symbolic species or animal to adopt. They can experience the joy of giving by donating to a group that protects endangered critters. That red panda is pretty irresistible!

Or for your tech and gadget family members: save money and e-waste by exploring pre owned items before splurging on newly produced stuff.

See the NRDC's tips for hosting a low waste gathering and find lots of ideas here to choose from to make your holiday season more sustainable.

However you choose to observe the holidays, may you simply and sustainably enjoy the season.
