Over 450 lbs of Clothing Found New Homes at the Re-loved and Re-sourced Market!

Thank you to everyone who donated, browsed, or swapped at the Re-loved and Re-sourced Market on April 27th! Thanks to your participation, over 450 pounds of the nearly 480 pounds of donated clothing were re-homed and given a second life through our free clothing swap. That’s hundreds of garments kept out of landfills and redirected into our community, where they’ll continue to be worn, loved, and reused.

Want to see more events like this or have an idea for a sustainability-focused event or community program? We’d love to hear from you! Fill out our quick survey

The 5 R's of Reducing Waste

Looking to keep your momentum from Earth Day going year-round? Set achievable goals for actions within your sphere of control. We suggest setting a goal to kick your single-use coffee cup habit and instead bring your own thermos, or ask for your drink “for here” if you’re planning to sit down for awhile.

Not only will switching to reusables help the environment, it’s also better for your health: paper coffee cups are lined with a plastic layer to prevent the liquid from leaking, but studies have shown that this layer releases microplastics and chemicals into your drink. This plastic layer also means that paper coffee cups cannot be recycled or composted.

How can you make a new habit, like bringing your reusable thermos to your favorite café, stick? Here are some tips to make a new habit stick:

1. Make your goal specific: Vague goals are hard to measure and stick to, while being specific can help you succeed. For example, “I will bring my reusable thermos to one coffee run per week.”

2. Get friends involved: Make your habit more fun by making it social! For example, text a friend to try out a new coffee shop with a plan to both bring a reusable thermos.

3. Allow for flexibility: A very rigid plan can be hard to stick to, and might make you feel like missing one goal means it’s time to give up on the whole thing. Allow yourself some flexibility and grace, and then get back on track without giving up entirely.

Shoreline Adaptation

Mill Valley is proactively planning for the growing risks of coastal flooding and rising groundwater with its first Sea Level Rise Shoreline Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Framework. Funded by a grant from the Ocean Protection Council, this effort will help the City understand local flood hazards and develop strategies to protect the shoreline.

The City is currently seeking proposals from expert consultants to assess vulnerabilities, propose adaptation solutions, and engage the community in shaping a resilient future. Learn more about this project and check out additional resources.

Marin Sustainability Tracker

Are you familiar with the Marin Sustainability Tracker? It covers categories such as energy, transportation, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and water.

Sustainability Tip of the Month

Make Some Meatless Meals in May!

The sun is out, poppies are blooming, and the farmers' markets are buzzing. May is a great month to experiment with some lighter, meatless faire.

Chew on this: Annually, American beef consumption results in carbon emissions equal to what is produced by over 32 million cars. So think creatively before you fire up the grill. Give one of these tasty and fun plant based recipes a whirl and no one will be saying "Where's the beef?"

Most things that are good for the planet are good for us too - plant based meals are a win win!
