Did You Know?

Environmental Impact

Everything we use on a daily basis has some kind of environmental footprint. As a school district, we estimate how much garbage and recycling we are having picked up each month. Last month we had quite a few buildings with overages. An overage means the dumpster was overflowing at the pick-up time. Some buildings had anywhere from two to nine overages!

Let's be mindful of what and how much we are throwing away.

Let's work together and see if we can significantly reduce our garbage numbers.

Cedar River Academy at Taylor

This group of students at Cedar River Academy are doing some investigative research into their school's trash collection. They have a feeling with all their recycling and compost efforts, they are actually producing less garbage and therefore need either a small waste dumpster or less pickups each week. The students worked with Ms. Sorensen, Green Team Coordinator, to figure out what steps they need to take in their investigation.

We look forward to your findings and an update CRA!

Building Report Cards

CRCSD students and staff play an important role in reducing our energy and water usage, waste consumption, and carbon footprint.

Energy Star Scores compare buildings similar to ours with others nationwide. So what can your school and staff do to increase your Energy Star Score? There is a list of simple ways to decrease energy usage at your school on our website; click on the Report Card button below.

Creating New Plants

The Green Team at Arthur Elementary has been growing and propagating plants. They are also repurposing cups to use as planters. Learning to propagate plants was one of the teams' goals for the January Challenge. We can't wait to find out what you plan to do with all those plants! Keep up the amazing green thumb work, Knights!

Now That's Teamwork

A team with serious teamwork. The Green Team at West Willow is well organized, committed, and working together to create a standard within their school that supports sustainable actions. Thank you for inviting Ms. Sorensen, Green Team Coordinator, to your team meeting. She joined them as they reviewed recycling pick up expectations and then split off into three groups, each taking a section of the school. The students respectfully and carefully picked up the recycling from classrooms and offices while making sure they:

  • Checked garbage bins for recyclables
  • Checked bottles and cans for deposits
  • Took the recycling to a central location in the school

February Challenge

Green teams participate in unique challenges each month and allow for the opportunity to teach students about environmental best practices. In addition, teams that participate earn funding for projects and activities thanks to our generous local business sponsors.

The February Challenge encourages Teams to be a positive influence in their school. No Waste Lunch. It is up to the teams to decide how they will accomplish this and for how long. The purpose is to try to reduce the amount of waste at lunch; food and materials. Teams are encouraged to pilot various ways to accomplish a no waste lunch.

Please notify Green Team Coordinator, Kristine Sorensen if you are participating in this challenge and what your goal for January is that you are working towards completing. Teams will recieve $150 for completing this challenge by the end of the month.
