Did You Know?

Engaging Students

Everyone can do their part to reduce, refuse, reuse and recycle, even KIDS!

There are lots of ways to incorporate sustainability into the classroom and everyday routines of both our staff and our students. Consider implementing some of the following ideas for "student helpers."

  1. Ensure equipment are turned off when not in use
  2. Turn lights off when leaving the room or when daylight is suffice
  3. Closing doors to the hallways
  4. Water plants
  5. Ensure water is turned off when not in use
  6. Ensure recyclable items are in the recycling bin
It Starts With Us!

Building Report Cards

CRCSD students and staff play an important role in reducing our energy and water usage, waste consumption, and carbon footprint.

Energy Star Scores compare buildings similar to ours with others nationwide. So what can your school and staff do to increase your Energy Star Score? There is a list of simple ways to decrease energy usage at your school on our website; click on the Report Card button below.

Year One Review

A huge THANK YOU to the Sustainability Committee for coming together to review the plan. The Sustainability Plan has been implemented for a little of a year and a new committee of CRCSD staff and community organizations reviewed the framework sections. The purpose was to take a look at one year of implementation and see how the District is doing ie: what's working, what's not, what's missing.

Thank you to our community partners

  • Kent Rector (Linn County Conservation)
  • Kelli Kennon-Lane (Indian Creek Nature Center)
  • Megan Lebeda (Kirkwood Community College)
  • Dina Haveric (Trees Forever)
  • Emily Upah (Alliant Energy)
  • Molly Dabroski (Grant Wood AEA)

Thank you to our CRCSD staff

Green Teams in Action

Working Together

Reuse and Reduce Will Follow

The Viola Gibson Green Team turned old into new. They upcycled old tennis balls into funny puppet characters and glass perfume bottles in sand art designs.

Very creative Gators! Thanks for the new ideas to reuse the old and reduce waste!

Prep for Success

The West Willow Green Team is working hard and getting their hands dirty to prepare for some indoor planters.

To ensure their plants get enough light they are building grow light supports with PVC piping.

A creative way to build trade skills and work together to create a project from scratch that your team can be proud of.

March Challenge

Green teams participate in unique challenges each month and allow for the opportunity to teach students about environmental best practices. In addition, teams that participate earn funding for projects and activities thanks to our generous local business sponsors.

The month of March is full of environmentally focused holidays. From a list provided by Green Team Coordinator, Kristine Sorensen, pick one for your team to focus on and create a way to celebrate it school wide. Students will need to do their research in order to properly educated staff and students on the importance of their choice holiday.

Please notify Green Team Coordinator, Kristine Sorensen if you are participating in this challenge. Teams will receive $200 for completing this challenge by the end of the month.
