Sustainable CT 2023 Awards Celebration

STORRS, CT, August 21, 2023 –Sustainable CT, a statewide, voluntary certification program that supports sustainability best practices in Connecticut municipalities, announced that their 2023 Awards Celebration will be held at the site of the American Mural Project in Winsted (Winchester) Connecticut on October 17th from 4-7 p.m.
The Sustainable CT Awards Celebration honors municipalities that have achieved bronze, silver, or gold certification, or Climate Leader Designation during Sustainable CT’s spring and fall certification cycles. This year, the event will be held at the site of the American Mural Project, located at 90 Whiting Street, Winsted, in the Town of Winchester, a town that achieved bronze level certification in the spring of 2023.
The largest indoor collaborative piece of artwork in the world, the American Mural Project is a three-dimensional mural spanning 120 feet in length and five stories in height. Serving as a pictorial chronicle, the mural portrays a diverse spectrum of laborers who have enriched American society and culture over the past century, and is a celebration of ingenuity, productivity, and inclusiveness...

On September 15th, we'll be discussing communications - the tools, methods, strategies and support that certified towns need to engage with their communities, stakeholders, and partners about their sustainability successes and aspirations. We hope you'll join us to communicate about communication!

Fare thee well, Joseph - make a splash
Our Community Outreach Manager, the electrifying Joseph Dickerson, is diving into the DEEP end of the pool this month - joining the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) as Senior Advisor for Outdoor Equity in the Office of the Commissioner. Bravo, Joseph! During his tenure with Sustainable CT, our Community Match Fund surpassed $3 million (now nearly $3.5M!) in investment in Connecticut communities, and helped hundreds of residents throughout the state make their towns and cities more inclusive, resilient, and vibrant for all. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation go out to Joseph for his vision, hard work and dedication. And now we have yet another friend who is in DEEP!

CT Insider: Fairfield Elementary School Earns Federal Green Ribbon Distinction for Sustainability Efforts
Jarrod Wardwell at CT Insider writes that Mill Hill Elementary was the sole Connecticut school that the Department of Education selected as a Green Ribbon School, an annual distinction that recognizes schools' efforts in sustainability that can save environmental costs, promote health and strengthen education about the environment.

Connecticut Green Bank: Westport Tennis Club Aces Solar Installation
The Connecticut Green Bank announced that Westport Tennis Club, 1696 Post Road East, Westport, installed a solar photovoltaic (PV) system on their roof using Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) financing. The 60.72 kW system is expected to save the facility more than $328,090 in avoided electricity costs over the 20-year financing term.

Patch and T-Mobile Recognize Mandi Moore of Windsor Locks
Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions. Mandi Moore, director of finance for the Town of Windsor Locks, has received the distinction. "Not only does Mandi go above and beyond in her role as Director of Finance for the Town of Windsor Locks, she also supports many town committees and initiatives. She was a big part of Windsor Locks earning the Sustainable CT certification, and devotes time and energy to this ongoing project."

CFMC 2023-24 Competitive Grant Application Process Now Open
The Community Foundation of Middlesex County is offering two application opportunities in the 2023-24 competitive grant process.
- Fall 2023 (opening August 31, 2023)
- Spring 2024 (opening March 2024)
Organizations considering an application in the Fall 2023 cycle that did not attend the August virtual information session must attend a session on Wednesday, September 6 at 9:30 AM.

Filing, Reporting and Disclosure Requirements for CT Nonprofits
The Nonprofit Resource Center at the Public Library of New London is offering a free nonprofit workshop sponsored by Candid and the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut (CFEC). The workshop's goal is to educate nonprofit organization members about filing and reporting requirements of the International Revenue Service (IRS) as well as the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS), Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) Public Charities Unit, and the Connecticut Secretary of State’s Office. IRS public disclosure agreements and general disclosure rules regarding donations will also be addressed. September 13, 2023, 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.

There is mounting evidence that trees in cities hold an important role in ameliorating the impacts of climate change and addressing environmental injustices. Ecological Approaches to Landscape Design + Green Infrastructure
Join ASLA Connecticut, UConn Plant Science and Landscape Architecture, and the Connecticut Green Building Council for a full-day, two-part continuing education symposium at the University of Connecticut. Part One will highlight recent work at the University, both at the master plan and project execution levels, with a series of presentations on ecological design, soil science, and storm water engineering. Part Two will be a presentation and tour of the new Science 1 Building and Woodland Walk (dedicated in June) by the University and design team members. Reception to follow. E-Bikes in CT - a Fellow's Notebook
Dylan Steer is a rising Junior at the University of Connecticut majoring in Environmental Studies and Political Science. As a 2023 Sustainable CT Fellow, Dylan worked at the Metropolitan Council of Governments in Bridgeport. Along the way, he sent us this dispatch from the e-bike lane:
"As my Fellowship with Sustainable CT comes to a close and I have spent a summer close to the environmental happenings across the state of Connecticut, I realize how much I’ve learned in such a short time.
