Summer Fun with Painted Bins

Painted Bins had an impactful summer educating Marin youth about the importance of waste reduction. Our Teaching Artist shared environmental and arts education with 20 students at a Marin City summer camp hosted by partner, Bridge the Gap. As a participant in their afterschool program at Sausalito’s Martin Luther King Academy this fall, we will expand this reach. The student-created posters from these programs will be featured on Sausalito’s waste collection bins. During a San Rafael Farmers’ Market, children created colorful take-home posters that illustrated how to properly sort disposable items into the correct bins. This interactive activity was part of our community outreach in partnership with the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art. With the school year beginning, Painted Bins is excited to continue our educational programs that empower Marin youth to be environmental stewards and inspire climate action.

Climate Action in Mill Valley

Sustainable Mill Valley has been mobilizing climate advocates in our community to voice their support for green building code updates that promote electrification. In response to these efforts, the City of Mill Valley is updating its building codes to require certain home renovation projects to meet a target energy score, which will encourage energy efficiency and electrification measures.

April Dark Sky Events

Dark Sky West Marin has received the final tally from our April Dark Sky event, and we are excited to report that our bottom line is now three times what it was when we first joined Sustainable Marin. We are thankful to Sustainable Marin for sponsoring us. Currently, we are seeking more volunteers to help us manage our growth, particularly anyone with technical skills or experience in non-profit leadership.

Tell Marin Water to Focus on Conservation

Marin Water is learning that increasing water supply has serious environmental consequences. Two projects to raise dams had to be scrapped.

Now a new report shows that 10% of its customers uses almost as much water as raising the Nicasio Dam would have provided. There are far less expensive solutions if the district focused on conservation or recycled water for its largest users. A recent editorial in the IJ lauds the need for conservation to protect our water supply.

Contact the Water board and ask them to refocus their efforts on large water users. Even better, attend the meetings.

Polluters Pay Climate Superfund: A Common-Sense Solution

Can you ask your town to pass a resolution for the Superfund Act which is co-sponsored by Assemblyman Damon Connelly. So far there are 3 councilmembers independently signed on as supporters

Mayor of Corte Madera, Pat Ravasio

Mayor of San Anselmo, Tarell Kullaway

Vice Mayor of Mill Valley, Max Perry

The climate crisis is a fossil-fuel crisis. A small number of the world’s largest corporations have emitted the bulk of global greenhouse pollution, raking in immense profits while we all pay the price. The Climate Superfund Act (SB 684 & AB 1243) would ensure polluters pay their fair share for the climate damage they have caused in California.
