Sutter County Superintendent of Schools Community Update: January 15, 2021
Important Information
Information from our School Districts

Our SCSOS Tri-County ROP Programs have been providing education and services for our schools and communities over the past few months. These highlights took place before the January extended stay-at-home advisory from Dr. Luu, our bi-county health officer.

Culinary Highlights: Instructors: Chef Roy Hansen and Chef Steve Alvarado
Chef Roy and Chef Steve helped cater the grand opening of the new multipurpose building at Williams Elementary School; they served Chef Steve’s famous vampire tacos to parents and students. Here are some more highlights:
·        Williams Parent Night: Besides eating vampire tacos, parents and students were given the opportunity to learn about our Advanced Culinary Arts Program and tour the Culinary Trailer.
·        Drive Thru Trunk or Treat at Williams Elementary School: Chef Roy helped cater this event by serving over 300 hots dogs to students and their families.
·        Drive Thru Thanksgiving Event for Feather River Academy Families: ROP partnered with FRA to help provide a full “cook at home” Thanksgiving meal to over 50 students and their families. The meal included a turkey, potatoes, stuffing, green beans, cranberry sauce, gravy and a pumpkin pie.

Automotive Technology: Instructor: Aaron Boyd: Lindhurst High School
Mr. Boyd and his students have been working very hard! They have been working virtually and in small groups of 5. They have completely revamped their classroom to include new paint and a smart board. Students have learned how to complete a full brake job, how to change oil and do a complete safety inspection on a vehicle. They have started restoring a “project truck” including new belts, hoses, water pumps, full tune up and lowered suspension.

Advanced Manufacturing Highlights: Instructor: Scott Stephens: East Nicolaus High School and Live Oak High School
Mr. Stephens has been working with his students to learn the basics of manufacturing. Students have learned how to use both a manual lathe and a manual milling machine. Learning the machines manually first help the students transition to the Computer Numerical Controls (CNC Machine) quickly sine they have a knowledge and understanding of how the equipment works. The students are using 360/Autodesk and Titians of CNC Machine which is a program that is used across the nation to help young workers/craftsmen learn how to use Computer Oriented and Computer Drafting Machines. Students have also been learning how to G-Code, which is how the computer talks to the machinery to create a 2d object into a 3d object.

Certified Nursing Assistant: Instructor: Kristen Nasca
In the past month, our high school CNA ROP students have been working on medical terminology and anatomy physiology of the musculoskeletal system to go along with learning how to care for patients with musculoskeletal disorders and post op. They have been learning all about the different parts of the nursing therapy team as well as their role in this team as a CNA. Our students have done so well overcoming the struggles of distance learning. Earlier in the month, they were working on a HASPI lab for the muscular system that they really enjoyed. It gave them a hands on feeling even though they were completing it from home. We also focused on clinical skills such as transfers with a gait belt and ambulating a patient with assistive devices and hip precautions. They will be recording themselves and uploading video submissions for credit.

Sutter County One Stop Success Story:
Harnek Singh

Harnek came to the Sutter One Stop in May of 2020 as a recent college graduate from Chico State with a strong desire and ambition to help others. He knew that he wanted to give back to his community, and make a positive difference for the lives of others, but he did not know where to start. Harnek came into the Sutter County One Stop and received assistance with his interviewing skills, his resume, and his job search. His Business Workforce Specialist assisted him with researching state and county agencies and navigating the state job systems: CalCareers and CalJOBS. She informed him about an opportunity and position with the Employment Development Department located in Marysville. The position is designed to help migrant and seasonal farm workers with finding work. With Harnek’s strong desire and compassion to help those struggling, he was a perfect match. He started his new position at the end of July. We know Harnek will be a great addition to EDD, and wish him the best of luck in his new career.

“Rhea Burns was really helpful; she guided me with resume format and always did follow ups. Therefore, Rhea was very supportive by giving me tips on resume and suggestions on how to tailor my resume. Also Rhea is very helpful in guiding customers and providing services at Sutter County One Stop.”
-Harnek Singh
A Message from the Superintendent

2020 was a difficult year for all of us. It required us to be more flexible and patient than ever before. In the education world, as we remained conscious and informed in regards to our health crisis, we made decisions for our students and staff sometimes on a daily basis. From March 2020 until now, we continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with Dr. Luu, our bi-county health officer.

I want to thank our district superintendents, county employees, students and parents for how hard you have worked this past year, and share that I am grateful for all of you. We have come together with the challenges that COVID-19 has brought us. I remain optimistic that a return to some semblance of normal is on the horizon. While the new year will bring with it some new challenges, I am confident that our Sutter County education community will get through whatever new challenges come our way, because we are stronger together.

"Let our New Year's resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word." -Goran Persson.

Stay strong and healthy,

Superintendent Tom Reusser
