Dear Audrey,
I am honored to invite you to attend my official swearing-in ceremony on November 19th, 2024 at 12 Noon at 100 W. Atlantic Blvd, Pompano Beach, FL 33060. This occasion marks a commitment to our community and a renewed dedication to the values that bring us together. I look forward to celebrating this moment with you, as your support has been invaluable.
On a more pressing note, I strongly encourage you to attend the upcoming Planning & Zoning meeting on November 20th, 2024 at 6pm. This session includes several major agenda items that could profoundly impact District 1’s future landscape and community well-being. Chief among these are:
-
580 Briny Project: This proposed 10-story structure, positioned almost entirely seaward of the Coastal Construction Control Line (CCCL), raises significant concerns. Not only does this plan conflict with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FL DEP) guidelines, but it also contravenes recommendations from the Environmental Resources Commission (ERC) and the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). These guidelines underscore the environmental and safety risks posed by such high-density developments along our coastline. To understand the gravity of these concerns, you can review the guidelines here. Additionally, you may remember that there were HUNDREDS of concerned residents involved with SaveBriny.com - which has lots of additional information related to this proposed project's history.
These proposals seek to amend the land use on a 46.4-acre parcel, transitioning from Open Space Recreation to Transportation. The change would permit aviation-related industrial expansion and airplane hangar construction, increasing building entitlements significantly.
If you're one of the many folks already annoyed with the recent additions to the airpark, including the increased NOISE issues related to the number of flight schools recently added with extended hours doing flyovers over your backyard, then you'll likely be seeing RED when you check out the Broward County MPO's Transportation Improvement Plan (skip to page 40), on which your outgoing District 1 representative served on the board, along with another outgoing city commissioner, Barry Moss.
It shows a huge financial contribution over multiple years to the overall growth of the Pompano Beach Airpark and likely, air traffic as well. This is, apparently, one of the "presents" they chose to leave behind as part of their legacy.
While the rationale for this change is tied to FAA requirements and city development plans, the environmental repercussions for District 1 and adjacent areas demand closer examination. This development impacts our existing open spaces, protected woodlands, and wildlife habitats—including the habitat of the burrowing owl—by potentially declassifying these lands from the Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL) Map.
More about the threatened population and Florida Burrowing Owl here:
As a united community, we have a responsibility to voice concerns, especially when our environmental sustainability, safety, and the character of District 1 are at risk. Please attend this meeting and make our collective voice heard.
Together, we can work to ensure that Pompano Beach’s growth aligns with our community's values and sustainable development goals.
Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you at the swearing-in ceremony.
Warm regards,
Audrey Fesik
