Dear fellow a/c lovers:

Time to stay inside! If you're home this summer and have a little free time in the air conditioning, please sign up here if you'd like to make some phone calls to help with my October 14 re-election. Grab a shirt/sunglasses/sign while you're here.

While I wish I could run a campaign on sweat - this campaign would be lined with gold - I do need to raise campaign funds

I've recently learned that there may be people running against me who can SELF FUND, from either themselves or their family. I work for a living and have no private or family funds - only your support.

For four years, I have represented this district that I call home, and I'm looking forward to many more years of serving my home state of Louisiana. Thank you for your loyal support, through good times and bad.

May your day be topped off with an ice cold Orange Crush.

- Mandie

This icey cold Orange Crush offered to me in Central City hit the spot on a very hot day.

Newly drawn District 91 boundaries (we think it looks kind of like a 🦜)

VETO SESSION

On July 18, 2023, the Louisiana Legislature overrode Governor John Bel Edwards' veto of HB 648, the anti-trans youth health care bill (also known as youth access to gender-affirming care bill). The day was tense and emotionally exhausting, and the building was full of rabid anti-trans people, as well as plenty of our transgender friends and supporters. During debate on the House side, my Orleans delegation colleague Rep. Jason Hughes and I spoke in defense of these children on the House floor. The mean crowd jeered and yelled at both of us. You can see my floor speech below:

More video from local news stations herehere, and here.

I cannot imagine how hard it must be to be trans in Louisiana right now. I am already receiving calls from worried parents about what's coming next. Our gubernatorial election is freaking everyone out because of some of the candidates who might win. But, I have hope that New Orleans will remain a safe haven for everyone.

RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN

We are back at it, and have been back at it, and never stop campaigning. We canvass a LOT, and when it's too hot, we phone bank. Your donated time on either is appreciated.

You can also: request a sign, give a sign, deliver a sign, buy a sign...your choice.

Our shirts continue to be luxurious and our sunglasses are incredible, as Allycea shows.

My legislative background reels have become campaign teaching videos. Check 'em out - they're sprinkled throughout this email.

WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO

I'm doing my usual three jobs right now: lawyer work, state rep work, and candidate. Never enough time in the day.

I recently received an award from Crimefighters of Louisiana for my gun safety bill! If you’re going to own a firearm, LOCK. IT. UP. Go buy a gun safe and maybe you too will be crimefighter of the year. :) I've tried the last few sessions to pass a gun safety bill, so I guess the third time's the charm. Even the Times Pic was pleased.

State Representative

Crimefighter of the Year

Focusing on reproductive rights & maternal health as a legislator has lead me to advance legislation, policy, and education in the legislature on these issues. This weekend I was invited to a federal HHS event at Touro Hospital in my district, for the opening of their new pilot "baby box" program, which are boxes sent home with baby and parent and includes what they need for those first few difficult months.

HHS Secretary Becerra was so wonderful. His immediate question to me was to ask if OB/GYNs are starting to leave the state.  And as Dr. Avegno of the New Orleans Health Department and I told him: YES! We also filled him in on:

  1. Louisiana being the first state to expand Medicaid post-partum care to one year due to my efforts & the wonderful LA Department of Health, and

  1. the failure to pass any abortion exceptions this year, including the refusal to pass HB 266, my bill with Lift Louisiana, which would have assured that women who have abortions won’t be criminalized.

I hope that his visit will make sure that the Biden administration keeps Louisiana on their minds.

Finally, I visited Roots of Music recently to view their facilities, because I was able to award them $200,000 in funds from the state this year. Roots is an amazing program that does much more than teach kids how to play an instrument - they mentor, do homework, even give them meals and snacks. They call their program for the little ones SPROUTS which is 100% adorable. Check them out.

If you're looking for a way to get more involved in your community and maybe do some service work, check out the local DSAVOTEMoms Demand Actionthe Louisiana ACLU, or Lift Louisiana.

I am always happy to speak to neighborhood associations, school groups, advocacy groups, or the like.

You can keep up with what I've been doing in the news, and I'm also very active on both Twitter and Instagram.

Thank you always for your support.
