Faces of Faith this week: Jonah

After all the hero characters we have encountered in the Faces of Our Faith Series so far, it’s kind of nice to finally have someone that doesn’t have it all together show up – someone who is a little rough around the edges and unsure of how to respond to God’s grace. The church is not simply comprised of saints, after all, but sinners and cynics and people trying to figure it out. Walking by faith doesn’t mean that we have to be perfect. But day by day we try, we learn, and we grow, with God our teacher revealing new things to us on the way.

Good Teacher, when we come to You with our questions and our critiques, be patient with us. Hear us and reveal to us Your wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

We lift up in prayer
  • For the rescue workers and medical professionals in Miami diligently working to find and aid survivors of the condo collapse, and for the families who have lost or await news of their loved ones.
  • That the youth mission trip to KY may have positive impact on our youth, their chaperones, and those assisted, for safe travels on their return.
  • For people suffering privately not yet ready to share publicly
  • For those who experienced damage and loss resulting from the tornadoes
  • For safety as people venture out on summer travels
  • Gratitude for the much needed rain

Real questions from real people to learn more about faith
What does it mean that God has steadfast love for us? “How deep the Father’s love for us,” the familiar hymn states. Some of us Christians might be surprised that this love is not just found in the New Testament – it is also throughout the Hebrew Bible, expressed with the word hesed. Hesed is a Hebrew term that connotes covenantal loyalty, enduring love, and unmerited kindness, and is often what we hear translated as “steadfast love” in our Bibles. That God has steadfast love for us means that we cannot earn it and cannot lose it. Even when we stray from God’s covenant, God fulfills it and keeps drawing us back to him. This is a deep love, and as the scriptures often say, it endures forever.

Swedish pancakes were back!
Swedish Pancakes were back at Swedish Days and though cut short by the rain, it was a great success! More than 300 hungry people were fed in less than two hours and just shy of $2,000 was raised for the mission trip. Currently Pastor Trudy, Swaney, and GLC high school students are in Kentucky where they are hard at work in 96-degree heat!

Sincere thanks to all who organized, worked, ran last second errands and ate at the breakfast! YOU are what made it the success it was. #generouslifeinChrist
