It's The
Mardi Gras
Mambo!

"Down in New Orleans
Where the blues was born
It takes a cool cat to blow a horn
On LaSalle and Rampart Street
The combo's there with a mambo beat
The Mardi Gras mambo, mambo, mambo
Party Gras mambo, mambo, mambo
Mardi Gras mambo, ooh
Down in New Orleans"

- The Hawketts

If you close your eyes, and wish real hard, you can almost substitute our Sweet Home for New Orleans.

Fat Tuesday is coming, and this weekend we've got music pouring out of our restaurants and clubs.
Maybe it won't rival the Crescent City, but there are enough entertainment choices to let you dream on it.

There's even a Mardi Gras Masked Ball and Casino to benefit the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.

I miss Oneonta's Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's, and their gumbo and jambalaya, but there are some creative folks in the kitchens of your favorite restaurants. So, keep an eye on the "specials" boards.
(New Orleans can be deliciously inspiring.)

Enjoy your Fat Tuesday, and whatever version of Mardi Gras you can conjure.

Eh tois!

We'll see you next Thursday.

The Exception and the Rule
This 1931 play by renowned German Playwright Bertrolt Brecht tells the tale of a profit-seeking merchant who desires to cross the Yahi Desert. The merchant's harsh treatment of his social inferiors shows the dark underbelly of human nature, particularly in the context of the capitalist system. The play reveals the inequities between the well-off merchant and his lower-class worker, in terms of both wealth and protection under the law.

Public Comment Railyard Development in Oneonta
Foothills Production Center, smaller brick building next to large yellow one, 1st floor. This is your chance to let our elected leaders know what sort of development you want to see in the city. Do you want heavy industry with gas provided by a decompressor in the town and giant trucks carrying CNG? Now, the GEIS( generic environmental impact statement) notes that gas will be used but that there is none on site. From where will it come? Do you favor renewable energy for the project? Greenspace? Bike paths, Dog park. An ecocommercial park? PLEASE comment. You may also send written comments to the City of Oneonta clerk's office.

The Killers
Long considered one of the quintessential noir films, "The Killers" - based on a short story written by Ernest Hemingway - is a character study of one man, portrayed by Burt Lancaster in his film debut, who because of betrayal and the love for a woman, played by the beautiful Ava Gardner, has lost the will to live and waits, alone in one room as his fate unfolds. The beautiful, tough and tragic 103-minute film, in a series of flashbacks, is told from the perspective of an insurance agent (Edmond O'Brien) as he tries to find out the truth.
