Dog Days of Summer
The period from July 3 to August 11 is usually the hottest time of year and is often called the “dog days of summer.” This phrase can be traced back to the days of the Roman Empire, when it described the 20 days prior to and 20 days after the star Sirius rises and falls in conjunction with the sun. Sirius was known as the “dog star” and is the brightest star visible from Earth in the constellation Canis Major (“large dog”). For the full history of Sirius and the origin of this phrase, check out EarthSky’s “Dog Days of Summer: Hottest in July and August.”
