Park ranger Tom Cowper retires
Park ranger Tom Cowper retired May 31 with 25 years of service in the Parks & Recreation Dept. Tom came on board as our first off-road vehicle (ORV) coordinator and trainer, providing training for safe off-road vehicle operation and teaching rules and regulations of operating these vehicles on public lands.

Tom developed and presented several puppet show programs on O.R.V. safety, pollution, and wetland, stream and lake purity. He created puppet characters such as "Reckless Ricky", and "Fido the Fecal Dog". Tom loved the parks so much that he even lived at Flowing Lake County Park for several years as a ranger-caretaker.

Nature interpretation has always been Tom's passion. As a trained raptor keeper, Tom took a variety of birds of prey into school classrooms as well as the parks, allowing children to have an up-close and personal learning experience with these majestic animals. He even used boa constrictor snakes as part of his educational programs when talking about safety.

Ranger Tom was well loved and respected by park visitors and the local community and was usually addressed as "Ranger Tom". The public, visitors and staff will greatly miss his smile and friendly and helpful attitude of putting the customer first. Thanks, Ranger Tom, for your dedication and commitment to the community, our county parks department and to our ranger team.
