Swing Into the Museum for Circus History

Our new elevator installation is complete and ready to serve patrons when they come for their next visit. Check out recent coverage by WGLT's Lauren Warnecke of local circus history with Museum friend and ISU's Milner Library Special Collections Librarian, Maureen Brunsdale. Brunsdale just released her second book, In the Shadow of the Big Top: The Life of Ringling's Unlikely Circus Savior and Bloomington native, Art Concello. Both of Brunsdale's books are now available in our Cruisin' with Lincoln on 66 Visitors Center & Gift Shop. Three new displays on the first and second floors of the Museum highlight circus history, alongside flying Irma Ward in the Rotunda.

Nominate a History Maker

McLean County has no shortage of people who have dedicated their lives to making our community a better place to live. Each year, the History Makers Gala recognizes long-standing residents whose outstanding contributions of time and talents have helped to make McLean County a better place to live and our community a better place for everyone.

We are now accepting nominations for the 2024 honorees. Nominees must meet the following criteria: be at least 70 years of age, have spent significant years in McLean County, and be able to share their stories with the community.

The deadline for nominations to be considered for 2024 is October 31, 2023.

Circus History on Display

Stop by the Library and check out the table case displays, created by Museum Volunteer JoAnna Mink, that highlight Bloomington-Normal’s circus history. These cases display circus related archival material that is rarely seen on display. These cases will be up through the month of August to celebrate our local Circus History, and in honor of Sweet Corn Circus (August 26-27) and the Circus Historical Society Conference happening in Normal this weekend! Our collections team has filled two cases in the north corridor of the first floor with Gamma Phi Circus memorabilia and the hook that Richard Shipley used to train Dorothy, the homicidal elephant. Learn more about Dorothy's story when you visit the Museum.

Evergreen Cemetery Walk Tickets On Sale

Tuesday, September 5

The Evergreen Cemetery Walk is a nationally-recognized, award-winning annual event that brings the voices of McLean County's history to life.

Costumed actors portray people from McLean County's past on the grounds of Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Their stories illustrate the impact the people of McLean County have had on history—locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Put on your walking shoes and bring your family to participate in this fascinating, outdoor theatrical program.

This event serves about 3,500 people, most of whom are students. It is a collaboration between the McLean County Museum of History, Illinois Voices Theatre, and Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
