COVID-19 Update
If you follow us on social media, you may have noticed that the Jekyll Island Authority has closed some of its indoor amenities and programs until further notice, including the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. This decision was made following precautionary measures from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and Glynn County officials related to the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Our hospital will continue to receive new patients; injured sea turtles can be reported by calling 912-264-7218 or 1-800-2-SAVE-ME (1-800-272-8363). While the Georgia Sea Turtle Center is closed to visitors, many Jekyll Island amenities, facilities, and outdoor programming opportunities remain open with regular business hours.

What does this mean for Swiss
and the rest of our patients?

Although you cannot visit your adopted turtle at this time, Georgia Sea Turtle Center staff and AmeriCorps members are still caring for our patients. To ensure our safety and well-being we have increased our precautionary hygiene protocols to include:

  • Employees with illnesses including flu-like symptoms are to stay home and seek medical attention
  • Increased frequency of hand washing and sanitation efforts by all employees
  • Increased sanitation of surfaces, including countertops, doorknobs and other areas throughout our facility
  • Employees to remain at least 6 feet away from each other to promote physical distancing
  • Eliminating congregations of more than 10 people

Please rest assured that Swiss is still receiving excellent care! At this point, we anticipate distributing adoption updates without interruption. If that should change, we will be sure to let you know. Thank you for your support of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center during this time!
Education Connection
Digital Learning during COVID-19: Scute's School
Our education team is excited to share new learning resources for teachers or parents at home...or anyone who just wants to learn more about wildlife!

These will include mini educational programs in the form of videos on Facebook, and resources linked on our website that encompass a variety of subjects like science, language arts, and even physical activities, like turtle yoga.

We’ll also be checking in with our husbandry team caring for our patients, so we will be sure to update you on their progress as well.
We are naming this educational series Scute's School , after our loggerhead sea turtle mascot, Scute C. Turtle. To let your teacher and parent friends know about this upcoming series, please use the hashtag #ScutesSchool.

Scute's School kicks off Friday, March 20th. Check in daily at 1pm for turtley awesome content!

Although we will not have face-to-face interactions with the public in our facility until further notice, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center remains dedicated to its mission of education, rehabilitation, and research.

Please do not unsubscribe as this is the primary method of sharing the latest news about Swiss' progress & future release information when it becomes available.  

Donations from the Adopt-a-Sea Turtle program support the Georgia Sea Turtle Center's mission of rehabilitation, education, & research. The timeline for a patient's stay is always dependent on the turtle's health & response to care and cannot be guaranteed. As there are many environmental factors and permissions to consider when scheduling turtle releases; we do our best to share information as timely (efficiently) as possible. Our staff do their best to consider not only the turtle's health, but also our supporters like you!
