Happy New Year!

Welcome to the first E-Newsline of 2018! We wish all of you a healthy, happy and productive year, and we look forward to sharing it with you. We're starting off the year with a lot of activities, including training and learning opportunities, as well as informal gatherings. You will read about most of them below! We want to thank everyone who expressed interest in the upcoming webinar with Rockwood Leadership Institute on "Courageous Conversations," and we appreciate the patience of everyone who ended up on the waiting list.  The response to this webinar was strong; clearly, many of us are feeling the need to improve our ability to have conversations that are difficult or cross boundaries. We are honored to play a part in all of your journeys!

Two new Leadership Grants awarded

At our November board meeting, we awarded $50,000 to support two new Leadership Grants! Both grants involved Fellows who have recently graduated, and both place a Fellow in a new position with a strong organization. The grants were awarded to:

New Hampshire Sustainable Energy Association (Concord, NH) and 2016 Fellow Henry Herndon. This $25,000 grant supported the creation of a new position for Henry as Director of Local Energy Solutions. Henry will work with local NH municipalities, organizations, businesses and citizens to provide assistance and resources to guide them through transitions to clean energy sources.

California Native Plant Society (Sacramento, CA) and 2016 Fellow Nick Jensen. This $25,000 grant provided support for the creation of a new position for Nick as Southern California Conservation Analyst. In this position, Nick will oversee the organization's conservation and advocacy work in southern California.

First meeting of the Fellows' reading group on race and equity in environmental leadership

The first meeting (by conference call) of Fellows interested in reading and discussing issues of race and equity in environmental work is scheduled for Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 1:30 pm ET / 10:30 am PT. This group of Fellows will meet monthly to share resources and discuss related issues, and hear presentations by Fellows whose work is informative. All Fellows are invited to join the group, or to join individual calls as your interests align.

For the first call, Rachel Morello-Frosch, UC Berkeley Professor in the Departments of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, and Public Health, will talk about her research examining the linkages between environmental health disparities and social/economic inequity.  Francisco Donez will facilitate the call. Fellows interested in joining this call, or for more information about the reading group, please contact Lissa Widoff.
Webinar: Understanding Full Costs

As a nonprofit or foundation partner, do you find that you're tired of the 'overhead' conversation? Do you find that after covering day-to-day operating expenses, you have other costs that you need to consider, such as hiring essential personnel, fixing that leaky roof, or replacing office equipment? Join Switzer Fellow Roger Perez, Senior Associate at the Nonprofit Finance Fund for a free, one-hour webinar to discuss the concept and practice of Full Cost. ( Click here for more information.)

Date:  Wednesday, March 14, 2018
Time:  12:30 pm ET / 9:30 am PT
Register here, by March 7, 2018.

Please note, this webinar is open to Fellows and colleagues.  Please feel free to forward to co-workers or close colleagues whom you think would benefit from this discussion.
