Sword Buyers Digest
HALLOWEEN EDITION
Greetings Fellow Sword Lover

It is that creepy time of year again.

And this suitably creepy edition of the Sword Buyers Digest for you this month celebrates the wackiness of Halloween in an especially appropriate way thanks to the launch last month of our Fantasy Sword website, Legendary Swords.com (yes, that website that I have been giving you sneak behind the scenes previews of is finally here!).

And of course, it is also that special time of year to stock up on some pumpkins - and do some 'fast' carving - even if it is not very artistic.

So how much fun can you have destroying pumpkins at this time of year? Popular YouTube Sword Channel Skallagrim shows us how its done..!
Just Launched - Legendary Swords.com!
We have been adding occasional updates for this project in previous editions of the digest for the last 15 months or so, but with this Halloween issue we are delighted to officially announce that our new Fantasy Sword website quietly went live to beta 1.0 on the 20th of September.

Get started by checking out the webcomic - the first chapter of the series is out in both classic comic and modern digital art versions. Then have a look at the swords themselves, read the backstories and delve into the lands of legends getting to the know the lands, the legends and of course - the monsters!

Fantasy Swords and Fantasy Monsters go together like a horse and carriage - and so this being the Halloween issue of the digest, let's take some time to check out some of the most horrible ones..

We have the usual collection of werewolves, vampires and other things that go bump in the night under the category 'the cursed' - but most are not just the standard fantasy trope. For example. animated sketetons are not usually just mindless things, but many retain their memories and personality - and make up the majority of the 'population' of the Land of the Dead - leading to some very creepy human-undead relations in that accursed land..
But perhaps the most relevant is the hideous and terrifying Jhir'kai which makes its debut appearance in chapter one of the webcomic - and looks a little something like this:
(this picture is actually a sneak preview of chapter 2 - the webcomic will get a new chapter on the 15th of every month and is part of an epic tale of high adventure that we have planned out several years worth of content in advance).

Anyway, check out all the beasties here in the Legendary Swords Bestiary - (also, be sure to check our Facebook page - we are releasing a SECOND webcomic series there with frequent new installments of an epic tale 'Aofie and the Arena of Doom').
The Ultimate Halloween Sword!
Fantasy + Functionality!
Most 'evil' fantasy swords tend to look either over the top or kind of lame. But personally, I think that the most bad ass looking bad guys sword would have to be the Brand of the Fallen, which was designed for Legendary Swords by Daniel Dacombe and brought to life by the good people at Blade Culture International.
It's not currently for sale, and I am not exactly sure when it or if it will be, but when it comes to evil looking blades, this sword takes it to a new level I think. Similar swords were used by German medieval Landsknecht to truly horrific effect. Indeed, there is something about the Kris or Flamberge blade that makes them cut very readily. The guys at BCI told me that every-time they make Kris swords, someone gets nicked by them and needs stitches..

Anyway, you can see exactly how this sword and many others were made step by step in our behind the scenes making of pages here
True Horror - the British media's demonization
of swords
I was only looking for some light-hearted Halloween themed zombie killing swords.

You know, the kind of thing most responsible sword enthusiasts like you and me think is a little funny. But this year, all I kept on hitting were articles about how insane it was that these swords and knives could be bought online at all, singled out and systematically attacked by a panicky British media and incompetent police forces.

Articles like 'sickening zombie blades delivered to your door'

This statement by West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner sums up the attitude quite well, for he "declared the zombie blades 'disgusting weapons' with 'no other purpose than to cause harm and suffering' and called for an international response to stop their sale and import. He pleaded with anyone who had bought one of these potentially deadly weapons to take them to a knife surrender bin."

You can read the full article here - it is attack after attack on standard web copy for swords - all interpreted through the distorted lens of a Hoplophobe (fear of weapons)

Back in the day, if a British bobby found a punk kid with a machete or a knife, they would probably have taken it off him and given him a good boot up the backside. These days, they would probably call in a tactical response team..

It really is quite pathetic - especially as the majority of these blades are not very effective weapons. For a start, they were never seen historically and the serrations and other protrusions would make it less effective as a weapon than a standard machete, or a bit of wood with some nails stuck in it. But they look scary, and that is the big issue - fear - fear of weapons, fear of young people, fear of the other - working hand in hand the media and the police in the U.K. have created a climate of distrust and fear..

So this Halloween, spare a thought for our fellow sword collectors in the U.K.

Special Congratulations to SBG forum members Wes Beem for scoring a spot on 'Knife or Death' and Mikeeman to appear in 'Forged in Fire'. Great work guys!

SBG members weigh in on the new site, webcomic and sword designs. The one they like the most is a bit of a surprise, see if you agree with their choices.

A video that graphically shows the demise of a pumpkin - and coincides with the start of open season on those weird fruit flavored vegetables..

An interesting and thought provoking article about the forensic differences seen when comparing cuts from wallhangers on bone to cuts done by real swords.

members put it to the vote - for some reason the Katana was not in the poll, guess it would have won as we all know it can cut through a tank..
Well, that's it for this special Halloween issue. With the new website finally launched, updates on this project will not be as frequent as they were to the lead up, so if you want to keep tabs on it visit the site and sign up to out newsletter or like and follow our Facebook page.

Whatever you do though, hope your Halloween is a fun one and let us as one deal with all those leftover pumpkins the only way we know how..

Until next issue, stay safe and happy swordening.
