From the Desk of Paul Southren

Despite all the challenges of what has been and continue to be one of the most challenging years for the sword industry, by hook and by crook, the industry is still sputtering along..

For the most part, it is kept afloat by aggressive sales and promotions - though this is definitely not sustainable. Many of the best deals have already passed, and once again we enter a very uncertain period..

The general trend is one of polarization - with a focus on cheap, mass produced junk and high end, very elite level blades with the middle class of swords (where we focus our efforts at SBG) under the most pressure. But as international shipping restrictions tighten their death grip on sending individual swords through the email, we will also see a trend towards local domestic monopolies with high local prices and barriers to international competition which, until recently, kept local market prices competitive..

If anything, this will exacerbate the global trend towards polarization push the market for mid-priced fully functional swords towards the endangered species list. So despite the industries best efforts, the downwards trend continues and it looks like it will get worse before it gets better...

The Last Lady Samurai

In the final years of the Edo period, the twilight of the Samurai class during the Boshin wars, one young woman defied all social trends to fight against the modern armies armed only with a naginata and the Samurai spirit. Who was the Last Samurai characters really based on?

Speaking of the Last Samurai, while the movie's characters were fictional, they were based on historical characters. Nathan Algran was based on Jules Brunet and Katsumoto on Saigo Takamori. Shame they did not think to include Lady Nakano in the mix there somewhere..
