Swords in the News

French 'Excalibur' Stolen from cliff face..

After 1300 years lodged in a rock in a cliff face in France, the Durandal sword of Roland has seemingly been stolen from its mysterious resting place some 100 feet from the ground. Shame on the heartless theif who clambered up to steal this priceless piece of history and mythology. What the heck is this world coming to?

Really U.K.?? 4 months jail for carrying this 6" toy??

In a sign clearly showing just how far removed from reality the United Kingdom has become, a man was sentenced to 4 months prison time in the U.K. for walking down the street with a 'sharpened' and 'fear inducing' 6' Zelda letter opener/toy. I just hope that the 'poor victims' who saw it in his hands are undergoing counseling..

Inside the Enduring myth of Excalibur

It's a classic, defining tale from both Britain and Frances past, but did you know that in some variations of the story, the sword in the stone is NOT Excalibur at all, and that the scabbard of this legendary sword was believed to be more valuable and magical than the shining blade inside? Read some of the myths and enduring stories of this legendary blade here.

Did medieval people actually believe in King Arthur

You might be surprised to learn that the mysterious Legends of King Arthur and if his tales were based upon a real historical figure were not taken for granted by our medieval ancestors. Indeed, at times it was a topic of quite heated debate. Find out more about what people really thought about this Legendary King in medieval times - the depth and complexity might surprise you.

Pull the sword from the stone, win $500

It's a fun concept, set a sword in a stone, go to Muscle beach and offer $500 to anyone who can pull the sword out from the stone. Maybe not quite as good a reward as becoming King of England, but $500 could at least get you the funds to buy a half decent real sword!

Snoop Dogg the Olympic Fencer!

He's done a lot of things in his life, but now rapper and entertainer extraordinaire Snopp Dogg can add sparring with an Olympic Fencer to his resume. And all things considering (after all, Snoop is a talented martial artist in his own right) he didn't do too badly..

More swords than the Danes, the violent lives of the Norwegians expanded upon

We touched upon this in a recent article, but the tale gets deeper and the verdict is in. The Norwegians were WAY more violent than their Danish cousins, with one study showing around 6% of Danes died a violent death while their Norwegian neighbors, closer to 37%. And they owned a lot more swords as a result.. So for scariest Vikings the award goes clearly to Norway..

Using a Lemon to polish a sword on House of the Dragon

No doubt it would have caused some head scratching for non-sword collectors out there, but seeing a humble lemon used when cleaning a sword in the House of Dragon series is the kind of thing that makes real collectors smile smugly to themselves. And if you don't already know why he might be doing that, catch up with this article (and may it be a spark for further research).

Weird Japanese government auctions have Samurai swords on offer

If you need a used ambulance, garbage truck or even a firetruck - Japanese government auctions have you covered. But did you know that they also have some actual antique Katana and Wakizashi on offer too? Well you do know, and some are cheap as chips for what they are.

So you found an old sword in an attic. What happens next?

You have read the articles here and elsewhere, when an old - possibly VERY old - sword is found tucked away for who only knows how long in an attic somewhere. But what happens next? Is it really a case of finders keepers? Who gets to decide and is the new owner always compensated in some way or can they keep it themselves if they want to? Its a complex topic, and this article explores the ins and outs.

Anna's story - this is my thing - swordfighting!

The love of swords often starts at an early age and does not discriminate based on sex, race or any other identity that may divide us. In this podcast, we listen to the story of Anna and how her love of swords and the sword fighting arts is most definitely her 'thing'.

Ubisoft Accused of stealing Zoro's sword from One Piece

There has already been more than a fair amount of criticisms aimed at Ubisofts most recent addition to the 'Assassins creed' franchise, accusing it of being OTT 'woke' in its casting and treatment of historical Japan. But now One Piece fans are accusing it of wholesale stealing the design of one of Zoro's swords from the series, and they aren't happy at all..

Unique SF home up for sale with instant antique collection as a bonus

If you have a spare $1million or so and are interested in a historic home in San Franciso complete with a massive collection of antique swords, armor and other cool collectibles, this one is for you! For the rest of us, we can only look on and drool..

Shropshire man hands in 'deadly' wallhanger swords to the police..

Terrified of being arrested for sword ownership, a U.K. man took the ultimate risk and transported his stainless steel LoTR replica and one of the those stainless steel ninja swords that cannot seem to actually cut anything (you know the ones) to surrender them at the police station, which is the 'right thing to do' - though lucky he did not get stopped on he way as that is a felony.. Yes, they have severe knife crime problems in the U.K. - but its not from people with toy Zelda keychains or stainless steel movie swords - its from idiot 'chavs' with kitchen knives with idiot role models and a broken culture..

Korean sword incident sparks calls for permits or bans..

While knife crime (usually kitchen knives) is a worldwide issue, sword attacks - which would account or less than a fraction of 1% of all blade related violence, are an easy target for bans when one idiot decides to use one for non-self defense purposes. This is exactly what happened in Korea, and sadly it seems their answer is tackling the helpless tool, which is always so much easier than trying to address the underlying issues..

Just for laughs..

Nearly everywhere we go and everything we do, we are bombarded by company logos. So just for laughs, Russian designer Iiya Denisov re-imagined many of today's contemporary logos with a medieval twist. Audi, PayPal and Windows are some of my faves, but all are pretty darned funny..

Renaissance Swords 'Renaissance' Pt 2

As much as I love Katana, Longswords and arming swords (and Viking swords, and fantasy swords, and a well made Dao, not to mention - okay, okay - this isn't as narrowed down as I thought so let's start again..

As much as I love the most popular types of swords, until recently there had been a conspicuous lack of some of European histories final sword forms.. While the military saber has its place, Renaissance era rapiers, sideswords and other very sophisticated sword types were, until recently, as hard to get a hold of as hens teeth..

But all that is changing in 2024 - it started early with the resurrection (and improvement) of several classic Hanwei designs that were lost in the factory fire of 2011, but just last month both Hanwei and Kingston Arms have outdone themselves with a large influx of extremely well made, perfectly tempered and totally lethal Renaissance era blades such as sideswords, rapiers and main gauche - that cool off hand weapon that was used to tangle up an opponents blade long enough to deliver a fight ending thrust or quickly force an opponent back who was able to slip past the point of the longer blade, and end up on the wrong end of a deadly, razor sharp main gauche..

Here's a quick video demonstrating some principles about how the use of a rapier and dagger together was/and remains, one of the deadliest and hardest to avoid getting killed fighting styles a swordsman may come up against..

Anyway, it really is cool to see these highly evolved and elegant swords and daggers making a comeback, and hopefully will also spawn some extra interest in the Olympic fencing team because as you may well know, fencing is one of the fastest and most reflex developing sports period.

Check out the ever growing selection of cool Renaissance era swords at your favorite sword retailer, more are coming soon so if you love these kind of blades, 2024 is your year for sure.

Video of the Month

Following up on our sword and dagger two handed fighting style popular during the 16th and 17th centuries, 'Blood & Iron' released a cool video a fair while back that shows some of the techniques of a medieval arming sword and buckler versus a later period sidesword and dagger.

Not only do you see the strengths and weaknesses of both blades and fighting styles, but they also spend some time discussing the main differences in handing, feel and overall effect of each weapon style.

Hope you enjoyed the August edition of the Sword Buyers Digest. Until next time, Happy Swordening all!
